I'm keeping a good eye on the error logs, however.

I have moved Legacy to the new server (hi, Alesia!) and I hope this resolved a lot of the issues.
Is it still occuring here?
I had been notified by Red Fireball for an issue and I resolved that - is this still occurring, if so, could you give me the conversation ID?
We're going to move to another server soon, I might speed it up if these issues keep happening.

I think a subforum in the Builds and Content section would be sufficient. Right now, 6/18 posts in the Farming section are regarding chest running. Having this isolated my encourage others to post either questions or recommendations for chest running.
Most of the posts currently are mine with individual location guides. These are drawing interest which is great. Outside of responses to these on the individual posts, I have been contacted in game by both players I knew and players I didn't know. I would like to potentially add more of these if they continue to be helpful to others and not a concern by yourself and other mods that they are added to the forum.
A subforum for chest running is now available under Builds and Content
I have a dream ... Seeing the old buy & sell gwshop' s system on this forum.
Maybe too much work in order to implement it, but it's my dream
To be honest, it's something that I have been thinking about as well. Perhaps one day, as it's a ton of work, but in the meantime I want to optimize the existing setup here as much as possible.
I'd like to be able choose page of a thread i go to from sections main forum page, while now i must open thread and after that choose right page, somuch extra loading ;P
Good point, it is something that could come in handy and it's certaintly something that I'm looking into for future updates
Display MoreSome of the things below I'm thinking of as I write so sorry its a bit long and rambling!
Chat
Chat boxes just get filled with spam, and a bit like the Off-Topic forum couldn't that be used? Or if you want more of a live discussion then theres a Legacy Discord and GW Global Discord. Sure you need another account but it can be accessed in web browser, it is linked to from here and is already populated and moderated and most importantly active.
On the topic of Discord; what is happening with the Guild Wars Legacy Discord? Is it linked to this site any more? Is it linked to GW Legacy Guild/Alliance? Is it linked to the GW New Hope group? Mr Crow seems to have set things up but it hasn't been very transparent.
Forum Layout
Forum wise I think there should be less sub-forums, not more. The current ones could even be consolidated.
For the Builds and Content; Individual, Team, Farming, Speed Clearing could all be put in one that then becomes more active.
Can we bring back the labels/tags for threads? That way you could have one Subforum with tags to identify the threads. Individual/Team/SC/Farm/Chest Run etc.
That way you don't have multiple low activity Sub-Forums but have an easy visual for the topic of individual threads.
Streaming and Video and Creative Works could be combined into one as well.
I don't think it is necessary to have as many/the same sub-forums as GWGuru used to have. There just isn't enough disucssion and content these days to have it separated out.
Guru Archive
Is it possible for you to see how many hits the Guru Archive gets and which parts of it as to its usefulness? Would it be useful to remake guides and information on Legacy and remove access to them on Archive if it is a lot of space/cost to upkeep. Maybe having a Guru Archive while historic isn't the best because it means people don't have to create new content.
Guides
Alot of PvE players are making interesting guides and build theories to try and now optimise and improve as much as possible, but people have taken to using PvX and GWSC wikis(?) (wikii?) for creating build guides rather than posting them here. Could cross-posting even be considered as it might make them easier to find and be commented on/discussed with different areas of the community. Maybe discuss that with the people making them. I see Krschkr used to post some Team Builds on Legacy but now posts to PvX and Reddit.
Xunlai/Trading
The trading forum seems like the most active part of the forum, could there be any improvements made there? I see that auctions are mentioned in this thread, but trading via forum always seemed to be preferrable.
You have in the sidebar the trading rate of Ambraces to Ecto; how often is that updated/how accurate is it? Is it possible to do the same thing for Platinum to Ecto?
These days a lot of people seem to trade in Ecto, even for items that are lower-end. I think it would give some clarity to that for people that might want to do trading but don't have stacks of Ecto and aren't au fait with daily trading rates.
As with the thread tags I mentioned above, could they be introduced for Selling threads to identify when peope are selling really high-end stuff. Allow people to have two threads one in each tag so they can list things and people have an idea of prices.
One of the things with GW trading is it can take a long time to understand the market, not just the price of something but what is worth something and what isn't.
This would be something an auction based site could do if it tracks prices and can average them, but being able to accurately price-check items based on what they're sold for could be really handy.
Forum Content
Mods forum should be renamed to In-Game Modifications/Applications for clarity. Put in some effort to find, host, and explain the more useful texmods. Make a proper guide for setting up and installing umod for GW with an FAQ. Have proper info and examples of the good texmods as Wiki isn't the easiest place to find info and is pretty outdated. You could also have a request a texmod option if there are people out there that would make such things. Now that we're into the stage of the game where QoL things are much more handy people may have good ideas vs turning your bow into a banana.
Legacy General
What is the Articles link in the heading in comparison to the Legacy News forum, couldn't just one be used?
Social Media link on the heading only links to Facebook groups, could that be renamed?
There are 8 people in the 'Legacy Team'/Moderators but I don't think it is that clear what their roles are and how they are involved. Guru used to show the forum moderators on the forum list but this forum doesn't do that. Maybe a page/post with the brakedown of their involvement.
There was a lot of commentary and discussion about the recent Wintersday competition teaser on Reddit/Discord. Some thought into how to publicise future Legacy events with a decent level of transparency.
This is a whopper
we were promised a black theme on gwl,but havent seen any progress on that either. So a black themed style would be really nice in the future.
Doing a black theme properly isn't that easy - I want to have it in place properly. Right now, lots of things here depend on light elements. When turning it dark, it doesn't always work and it requires a lot of small tweaks to pull it off correctly.
That being said, it's still being worked on.
Things that are not the way they should be or that just looked off: the quotes looked horrible, there are a lot of white styled elements and white borders that just look awful and I need to use different tactics to make things look nicer. I also really want it to look different and I'm spending a lot of time on it being different. It should't just be black, it should be proper black.
I'm currently testing the black theme out (it's also available for everyone now under the name The Dervish) as a daily driver and I'm constantly changing things to it.
Feel free to test it out and give me feedback - but it's something that easily breaks. For example, when I was typing this, the text I was seeing was white and unreadable since I am on the admin-background. Normal users wouldn't have this issue (their backdrop is just black). But it's things like that that's holding it back.
The editor also looks awful and needs some TLC still.
I assume this is a slight typo
As a full time chest runner and advocate for others to try and possibly enjoy doing it as well, I think it would be nice to separate the Farming Section from a Chest Running section. These are really 2 different activities and potentially 2 different audiences. Some overlap but it would be nice to go to one of the 2 locations depending on which you are interested in reading about at that time. Over the last couple months, I have seen and been part of discussions regarding chest running and this would give an isolated location for these discussions. Just a thought.
Would you prefer the Chest Running to get it's own subforum below farming or just a totally seperate category for it?
maybe something like this: https://www.chatango.com/ would be a nice addition, but i dont know if other players like this...
in my opinion it would be nice to have, but it s not really needed , just an suggestion^^
Shoutboxes are handy and I had it installed on another forum - it can be a great asset, but also a great curse. It's something I'm keeping in mind and it might appear in the future.
Staying consistent in the way this forum have been run... it's moderation, the staff and the layouts of the forums have been pretty top notch. More of that in whatever direction this forum chooses to go will be good enough for me.
As for the suggestion for a shout box? I'm on the fence about it. On one hand it really does enhance the community by bringing them closer together, but it also allows for escalation of issues to grow wildly out of control without strict and heavy moderation at all times.
There are some people who join forums just to troll these spaces and it sours the over all experience for the rest.
See the above if we're going to have a shout box, it will have to be moderated well, like we've always tried to run the site :).
Kudos to all our moderators!
Glad you like our work so far! We're trying to improve it as much as we can for the future
Transparency, tax cuts, and border security.
oh, wait... wrong forum!
I'll pass this on to our Master Tax-receiver MaxBorken.
To many people on outdated server imo
The Guild Wars server were replaced last summer by brand new cloud infrastructure.
It's even running overprovisioned with more servers than it really needs.
So saying that it's too many people on outdated servers is factually incorrect.
No. Graphical issues are completely independent from network connectivity issues.
There is a known bug with Guild Wars where running with a high frame rate causes lag and rubberbanding.
You can try to enable Vertical Sync, that might limit the frames enough to stop this from occuring.
Had never been to the site on my phone until this moment in all honesty as I figured it would be clunky and hadn’t really figured there was a mobile version of the site. No offense meant here! Have to say, I can see why there is no app. The site on mobile is super user friendly and functions really well. Thanks for letting me know and giving the details!
No problem, most forums are a monstrosity on mobile after all
So I have an iPhone and I genuinely love these forums.
That said, are there any plans/hopes for a an actual mobile app? I know that's a large undertaking but have to ask.
Would be great to keep us all more connected.
Whilst a sizeable chunk of our visitors are using mobile phones, the largest chunk of it are visiting the forums through their browser.
We have an app for Android, but it is barely being used at all.
Developing one ourselves for iOS is something that will likely never happen - I'm not an iPhone user and can't properly test that app.
Next to that the mobile version of Legacy is working quite well - in fact, it runs extremely well, as it was one of the must-haves when we switched over to this software.
So all in all, chances of a mobile app coming are very slim.
I use an iPhone as well and I think the forum functions excellently through Safari. I don't really see the need for an app.
I am a member on other forums which use the Tapatalk app however I find it easier to use Legacy through Safari than those functioning on Tapatalk.
Tapatalk was more a quick fix for existing forums, rather than a properly designed forum solution. So it works, but not that well. But it's a lot better than those old school vBulletin's.
The current version of Legacy was built from scratch to be responsive.
New update, I spent some time testing how to resolve it, but it's taking far longer than I hoped.
It'll return though.
After quite a long while, it's back. Will get some template changes soon, too.
How does it work now? You need to use the bb code gwbb for it to work
You can simply use [build=buildcode] or [Skill Name] within it to make it work.
For example: [Pain Inverter]
You might need to reload the page after posting, since the javascript might not pick it up.
There is a button (gamepad) in the editor now to enter the gwbb code.
Hello everybody,
I'm typing this message after 19 hours, 19 minutes and 9 seconds of downtime on Guild Wars Legacy (we've got monitors for that information, after all).
The downtime was caused by issues between our server and the network uplink provider, which was far out of our control and unfortunately, we were forced to wait until they resolved this issue.
Some other issues forced us to restore Legacy to the latest available backup - we have lost a tiny bit of content, but due to our backup system almost everything was left here.
Update: I have been informed by our service provider that it was, in fact, not an issue with the network uplink provider, but the physical hypervisor which housed our main Legacy web VM has had major issues and this led to data loss - the VM got corrupted and could not be restored.
Fortunately, I might have overdone it on the backup front and was able to restore GW:Legacy with barely any data loss.
When the downtime started, we had no idea how long it would be and if we could retain the existing content that was not yet available in our backups - this led to us not spinning up Legacy on another server as we wanted to avoid having a Legacy server that was out of sync - we'd lose posts in either way.
This incident was a good pointer for us and tested a lot of the systems that we have in place when Guild Wars Legacy has issues - we have an amazing backup system, our emergency staff chatroom was online and was actively used, our monitoring system notified us about the issue within seconds of it starting. Other than cosyfiep being treated for withdrawal symptoms, everything is fine :).
Over the last few weeks we've been optimizing the Guild Wars Legacy infrastructure and we'll be taking further actions to avoid lengthy downtime.
The first step in this is to setup a secondary database server that will replicate the main database, so loss of posts is reduced to a minimum.
Next to that, we're going to drive up the database backups even further.
Sorry for this downtime - it was completely out of our hands, but we're taking steps to avoid further downtimes like this and will be handing over the responsible ones to Mad King Thorn.
- Kevin
I wouldn't say the community is bad -it's a very close-knit community nowadays and almost all activity happens in guilds - LGIT, PUPU, GWAM amongst others.
There are ton of players that are happy to help others.
Are there more toxic players? I wouldn't say so. But the fact that people are centralised in a few locations, makes it easier to encounter them. And that plays a big role in that.
I never had issues with finding other players to play, though.
I've poked some people at ArenaNet and the ftp website is back online!
You can find them all in ZIP-files on http://gw1101.gtm.guildwars.com/community/fans…/skillicons.php if I recall correctly
- Kev
Ok, so I contacted you and heartily agreed you have more than enough moderators. As for content, especially for Pre...I have a bunch and I'm just going to start
dumping it onto a board. Is "General" a good place until you can sort it out?
It would be, yeah
I've tried to stay outside of this conversation for a while, but I'm going to step in now and clarify a few things:
NCSoft hasn't had anything to do with Guild Wars since september 2015 - at that point, ArenaNet took over the publishing of both GW1 and GW2 - whilst ArenaNet is still owned by NCsoft, the direct involvement of NCsoft in operations have been cut since then.
That's also the reason why the in-game shop closed, as that was being run by NCsoft.
Does that mean that NCsoft doesn't care? Well, NCsoft is more focussed on Asia nowadays and ArenaNet has proven that they can handle running an MMO and the business side - so they're a bit more out of sight.
For GW1 to get a new expansion, a few things would need to happen:
- They'd need to train a new team to use the GW1 engine and tools - since most of their current team is working on GW2 and they need those people there - they won't remove people from GW2 to improve GW1.
- The GW1-tools have been broken terribly and have been a nightmare to use for years. Joe Kimmes was responsible for adding the Balthazar weapons (it was a pet project of him) and it took him a very long time to get the tools to work at all - which is understandable, since those tools didn't get any use in the last 5 years.
So, in order to fix those, they'd need a sizeable programming team to properly fix them and probably would need to build a few new ones.
- Bill/Stephen have been trying to add new features (like the item rarity coloring, bigger bags), but it caused a lot of issues when they tried to implement it - I'm not sure if it's still coming, I sure hope so, but the GW1 engine is very old by now. Knowledge of it has lessened in the company (not only due to people leaving ArenaNet, because a ton of GW1 people still work there), but if you stop working on something you lose knowledge of the structure quickly (I'm a sysadmin/devops, I know what I'm talking about here :P).
- If all of these hordes have been tackled with, new content would be possible - but it would take a year before anything would come of it, at the least. You'd need people to get used to the tools and software and that's something which takes a while. Since the live team was about 10 people, those were able to create sizeable content drops in the game, but those were rather small and released in bits.
- Would it still be financially viable to create new content? Whilst I don't doubt that there are a lot of players and a lot of returning ones, I don't know about this. You'd need to train new support staff, hire a new team and train them, the costs to get everything working again and up to modern standards... it's going to be really expensive. GW hasn't had new content for years and the community, while still being sizeable, might not be big enough to support all of this.
Once all those hordes have been passed, a new expansion might be feasible. But those are quite big hurdles.
Should we get this big enough, I don't doubt things are possible - but we'd need A LOT of people to pull this off.
We're here to offer the place to let you promote this and if we can we'll try to help, but this isn't an easy feat to pull off - remember that the original campaigns were made by about 50 employees in about a year - to get a return on that, you'd need to sell a lot.
So, all in all: not impossible, but nearly. But there might be a small chance.
What I think is more realistic is having a small live team again that can create some small content drops, perhaps and work on small improvements that the game still needs. That alone would be amazing for me and much more likely to happen.
- Kevin
Yep, I might be to blame for this video.
Display More19 Gb is Fantastic! That's a ton of space.
My position was on a free hosting site, so those are the issues we faced there.
They allowed unlimited categories, threads and posts, but imagery was minimal.
Even the old Community forum run by NA & LP only allowed hosted images.
It's nice to know you have that kind of capacity here.
LOL! Dontcha hate it when stuff like that happens? Ah well, keeps you on your toes I guess!
Thanks Kevin!
We're currently actually only using about 4.4 GB in total storage on the server, so that's really plenty of space.
Legacy is hosted on currently 4 servers (Webserver, Backup node, the Archive node and the Mail Server) - all of that is being monitored and visible on https://status.guildwarslegacy.com
Legacy is designed to be a bit more resilient (and fast) than most sites, it's one thing where I am really proud of
And yeah, it keeps you on your toes :)!
Yeah but even external images? Thanks for the fix Kevin!
I've looked into that - seems for some kind of reason embedding external images was disabled - that's enabled again. Got an example post that still has the issue? It'll help with debugging.
I'm afraid that I wasn't able to reproduce this bug - what are the exact steps to reproduce this?
Display MoreSame here...
It may not be a bug, but a new standard to reduce image storage demands.
Most forums get a certain amount of image space for free.
Once you max the available free space, it can be very costly to carry mounds of images.
The 2 ways around paying for extra space are:
1. Delete images from old sales threads (or the whole thread if you don't care about post count, prices are usually outdated anyway.)
2. Remove the ability to store linked images with a simple click. It reverts all linked images back to just links, cutting down the load on storage.
My guess is it's number 2.
Not a bad solution if all you don't have the funds to upgrade image storage, which as I stated can be very costly.
One of the mods should know. If not, Iaerah would know for sure.
We're not trying to save space - our server has plenty of free space left (19 GB to be exact), so I'm not worried there - Legacy is backed by a couple of servers and disk space is certainly not an issue.
We're also not on a free host (never have been) or on a shared webhosting provider - Legacy is simply too big for that (simply put: we'd use too much resources for that). Legacy has been managed by me from the start on several platforms.
I'll have to look into what exactly is causing this.
The poster above me usually wears a white hat with his white mantle buddies.
Lies! Slander! That is totally false - I am and I will always remain neutral! Hail the Unseen Ones!
Oh.. excuse me, I had to burp there. Yeah, that was it.
On topic: The poster above me secretly has no secrets! Haha!
Can you update me on what the additions are? I haven't been active for a while.
The poster above me want more trophies What do you think, Iaerah ?
The poster above me thinks that she has enough trophies
Which additions are you talking about? Did they make Toolbox unsafe to use?
I meant the additions to the official Guild Wars game client, Toolbox is still safe to use as far as I know.
Unfortunately not, because the picture is just black.
Could be an issue on the server, looking into it.
Edit: Nope, my uploads work. Could you try to reupload the original image? (Sorry for this attachment, I had to test ;))
Hello everybody,
We've switched our mail provider out for a new one, and with every change some issues can occur.
Should you have any issues, please email us on [email protected] - thanks!
- Kev
Just a little update, with the latest additions to the client, I no longer use Toolbox.
Hey guys,
Glad to find a community still dedicated to the game I grew up dedicating what seemed like my life to.. I have stumbled on an itch to play some original Guild Wars, however am having a hell of a time getting the .exe client file to launch after downloading from the ANET GW1 website.. Can anyone shine any light onto getting it to launch specifically in Windows 7 64-bit? I tried changing the compatibility launch options to Windows 98/ME, to XP, and everything else to no avail... Trying to log into my old GW account is going to be a whole nother ball of wax because im not sure I can remember my old log on creds lol.
Any help would be appreciated.. I do also have the original box/disks/activation keys for both Prophecy and Nightfall, Factions and EoTN were both bought digitally back in the day, if that matters at all.
Thanks guys!
Is there a specific error you are getting?
Bad timing on this, though. It kinda overshadowed our cupcakes...
That being said, there's always a line you need to make sure you don't cross - if you do, the results of that are yours to bear.
Is this justified? Well, it's not my place to judge about that. Fact is, people lost their jobs and perhaps got their name burnt as well - morally, that's a bit of a grey zone for me.
Thank you all
This was really something the entire community did, I'm just glad to have been a part of it - the thanks are really for all of you.
We have had good communication with ArenaNet since when I first approached them - they even invited us to the GW2 meetup last year in Cologne, which I attended (and handed over some chocolate).
They've provided us with prizes, which allowed us to do cool things.
ArenaNet really cares for this game, and I'm glad we could do this, all together!
- Kevin
We've had some more issues concerning emails (none were being sent), but these have now been resolved and mails should be arriving once again.
- Kevin
Hello everybody,
Over the last few weeks we've had some issues with emails not getting received by @outlook.com or @hotmail.com emailaddresses.
This is because the mail provider we're using has gotten blacklisted with Microsoft - and is currently working on resolving this.
In the meantime, we are unable to send mails to these addresses as we're getting an error back when we try to send to these addresses.
Should you have issues getting activated, please mail [email protected] so we can manually activate you.
Kevin
Could you have a look at the search function font colour?
Should be better now
Livia have a lot of persuasive skills over half the population.
If White Mantle is to stand a chance, they need a similar.. recruiter.
We already have a good recruiter - it's called common sense.
That, or being killed on a Bloodstone. Your choice.
It doesn't work with accented characters. I even generated a list with all the possible permutations before I found out. Then I just used the regex chat filter on Toolbox and forgot about it.
We'll have to make sure to inform DrStephenCW of this - I'll let him know.
Well, I've seen a lot of opinions here, but there have been in my opinion some great Guild Wars mods - DressUp, GwVanquish, DirectSong editor, TexMod are a few that I've used before. They enhanced my game experience quite a lot.
The devs of Toolbox have, in my opinion, the right mindset and are willing to remove features if required - something that we can only be glad for.
It's still a far way of from being a real cheating tool/bot, but it has the potential - you can skip required quests etc, and that's a line too far for me. But those are only a few features compared to what is really handy on it.
But, I'll cut it short here - if ANet isn't okay with it, we won't be either - otherwise, we'll make sure to provide a platform for it here.
I'm not strictly against Toolbox - in fact, it's an amazing tool that offers a lot of QoL I believe would have been added should the game have been actively developed for longer.
For example, opening up your storage - in GW2, bank storage access is far and between, but in GW1 you've literally got storage access in every outpost.
Having a button to open it up, instead of having to find and run to the storage chest, would be a great time-saver at no cost/negative influences.
I also liked several of the features that toolbox has (I started to use Toolbox for the borderless windowed mode).
All in all, Toolbox is in my opinion a response to the game it's current state, but goes a bit too far - it's hard to find a gate monkey nowadays, so having the possibility to do that without having a second player for that, in the current state, is fine to me.
Transporting to any (UNLOCKED) location in the game, without first having to go through Embark or any other outpost in order to reach it and re-adding your heroes - that's just annoying. Imagine having to go to the Gate of Pain - you'd need to go to Kamadan, through the Vortex to finally go to the Gate of Pain - only to re-add your heroes. Embark tries to solve this, but it's still a lot of work to find everything. In that viewpoint, it only shortens the time that you need to reach it and removes some annoying things - and this itself gives no real advantage - being able to reach places you shouldn't (or not without some special items like The Deep) is another thing.
Other things, like flash GW's icon on the toolbar when you receive a new message is genious.
It's a bit of a grey area - and I'm currently no longer using Toolbox. I only really used the Open Xunlai Chest and borderless window mode.
It would be nice of having a ToS complaint version of Toolbox - until then, I'll allow discussion of Toolbox on Legacy, with the caveat that when things are directly about cheating, they will still get deleted and it's the discretion of our staff to decide if it should be deleted or not.
Stephen also noted it's on his list to work together with the devs to make Toolbox TOS compatible, IIRC
