    Hey hey all :)

The monthly breakdown is as follows:

    * € 10 - Main cost for the server that is running our site
    * € 2 - Cost for snapshots (backups) of our server, occuring about once a week
    * € 3 - VAT for the server + snapshots
    * € 2 - Domain costs
    * € 10 - Costs for our backup server that makes daily backups of our site + database
    * € 2 - VAT for the backup server
    * € 5 - Extra bandwith costs (variable) (mostly traffic between backup server and main server)

That brings us to about €30 a month for hosting costs alone.

The other €10 is mainly used for transaction costs that are billed to us when a donation is made (unfortunately, we have to pay a chunk of each donation).
If we get 10 donations of €3, that means we won't get €30 but about €25-€27.
The rest of this is used as a net to cover unexpected costs, chargebacks (a chargeback always costs us €15), a rainy day fund and to allow us to organize contests with cool prizes.

My ultimate goal is to have an extra server ready as well, so that when our server would go down, we still wouldn't have downtime because of our secondary server. That's however not feasible for me to pay right now.

These costs are actually very low for a VPS that we're running on and that is because I am managing it completely myself. Managed hosting easily costs 3-5 times more.

I also had no clue about this, but I'm glad it's fixed - properly this time.
This proves that ArenaNet still cares about us, even though it's probably only 1 person (I'd put my money on Joe Kimmes), who has been a bit more active on the wiki a few weeks ago.

I'm glad that they did this :).

And that kind of attitude makes me even gladder that we started Legacy... even though Guru should be seen as lost now, at least we have a site now that's not in Curse it's hands...
What makes me afraid is that Curse has these Guild Wars sites on their server:
    * GuildWiki (I can't imagine that it's still that popular, with the official Wiki... won't they kill this next?)
    * PvXWiki

Yeah, they kinda lost my faith in them now.

I'm going to answer these the best I can...

    1. Yes, we have more than enough bandwith to host it here. That's not the issue - the issue would be the size of the website, we don't have enough diskspace for it. I can set up a seperate server, with extra storage, but it would need to be funded by the community every month to stay online. Guild Wars Legacy is running on a server that I also use for other projects, so while income is handy it isn't required. For the archive, that would be required. Last I heard someone had a backup with a size well into 500 GB.
    2. I'm not aware of any full backups - if you do know it, let me know.
    3. Legal implications? Well, if the original content is down, we're just mirroring it. If we listen to takedown requests, we wouldn't do that much wrong.
Since we're not located in the USA, we're not required to follow the DMCA though (our servers are located in the Netherlands) - we however do need to respect the copyrights.
    4. No, we wouldn't be able to do this. However, we would be able to use a Google Custom search to make it searchable, but it wouldn't be perfect.
    5. We would need more people and money to realize this.

    Hello everybody,

In order to make our website more secure, we have been using HTTPS/SSL since the beginning of our site.
However, quite a lot of you are using http-images instead of those protected by SSL (https).

When an image from a non-secure source (non-https) is loaded, our site "loses" it's lock and is marked insecure.
To solve this, we're now displaying all images from a non-secure source as a link.
If you use an HTTPS-source, it will display like it always has.

Most image hosts support https, like for example Imgur.
Try to change the http to https, in most cases this will work.

This helps secure our site and maintain our lock on all pages :)

    Kev

    Go, Kevin Go! :)

Have you done any progress so far?!

I've started working on the new guild recruitment system, I decided to wait until Laravel 5.3 came out since it has some really nice changes which will come in handy.
The domain name is also taken care of, it's just programming now! I'm kinda busy right now with my job, but I'm working on it. Hopefully I'll have something to release at the end of September.
I'll start testing the system with some guilds as soon as the basics are ready and I need feedback :).

For the tag that shows character names for members only, it's still something I'm looking into and it's looking a bit more complicated to implement than I had hoped, but I also hope to implement this during September.

They're aware of it, we haven't actually got any information that they're working on it :P

    My thoughts are that they:
    * Got an error with the web server which went down, but this should be an easy fix and could be implemented automatically. Should also be resolved with a server restart.
    This makes this one unlikely.
    * They are performing server maintenance, but an unplanned and unnotified one. It's also taking very long.
    * Something crashed on their server.
    * The forum got hacked (not unlikely, since it's running on a very old version of vBulletin, and vBulletin isn't really a well-written forum: https://www.cvedetails.com/vulnerability-…/Vbulletin.html)
    * They shut down the servers on purpose.
    * Something else.

Not going to speculate any further on this, but that's why I think is likely (I'm a sysadmin specialized in Linux, so I have knowledge about these things).

    Kev

My current goals are to push a few more characters through every ounce of content, as I have mainly done that on 1-2 characters (my Warrior mainly, and my assassin a little bit).
Next to that I finished my HoM, I'm still working on getting GWAMM. To get it, I'm working on getting Drunkard/Party Animal and one title I haven't decided upon yet.

If you want to help, all help is welcome :P I'm at 6000 points on Drunkard/Party Animal.

Next to that, I also enjoy playing the game :) So yeah, you can find me online quite often :P

I would also like to point out that Gaile is still a player and a member of our community in the first place - the second place is that she works for ArenaNet.
Forcing her into answering questions will only drive her away and for a good reason.

Don't forget that even though you're a developer of a game, you can still very well be a player in it, without having to be a representative of the company you're working for.
As such I'm pretty certain that Gaile has been playing a lot more Guild Wars than we're aware of (the possibility exists that she has a private, non-work account too). So don't try to be so aggressive towards her :) let her enjoy the game.

While we all would like more information from ArenaNet in the first place, I think that we should all be aware that the main thing that bonds us is the love for this game.
I'm pretty sure that if Gaile had something to share with us, she would do it in the first place.

As of now, the main channels of communication for Guild Wars are, afaik, Stephane Lo Presti and Joe Kimmes. Both of them are still somewhat involved with the Guild Wars on a professional level (https://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/User:Stephane_Lo_Presti / https://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Feedback_talk:Joe_Kimmes) and both of them are more involved than Gaile still is (Stephane being a community manager and Joe being a member of the Live Team afaik) - and we should try to avoid hammering her for information.
Don't forget that Gaile's role for the last few years has been that of a Support Liaison and Forum Communications Team Lead for Guild Wars 2 - she might not even be up to date with what's going on for Guild Wars 1 - it's a big company after all and I doubt that in her current job Guild Wars 1 is something that pops up often.

While I absolutely agree that a feedback channel should be available, I'm currently trying to find another way to get this - hammering Gaile won't help us with that.
Instead, I think that we should, as a positive community, try to reach out to ArenaNet in the best way possible and ask if there's a way that we could get a feedback channel - be it official or unofficial.
The best way to start there might be to contact Stephane, as he's one of the community managers.

In the past week I've mostly been listening to The Mars Volta. Muse before that.

EDIT: Why is this in it's own subforum?

ask Kevin...he created this...I did the reg OT threads...

Yeah, shouldn't be the case. Fixed it! :)

I'm currently listening to Alpenglow by Nightwish!

Honestly, I would rather have that they don't make Guild Wars F2P. They don't have a support team in place right now and the game clearly wasn't built for it.
In GW2, you have the gem store that is completely integrated to make it easy to spend money, while in Guild Wars there is no such thing, except for the external shop which doesn't really have that much except for some costumes.
They would seriously need to ramp up the security measures of this game and start making sure that there are quite a lot of measures against gold sellers, because it's already a huge problem.

Unless they decide to drop a big bag of money on Guild Wars, I don't expect that to happen.
I would however like if they would put a small team on GW1 again... but one can dream.

For the rest, I would like to ask an interview yeah; but obviously we would need to talk about GW2 as well in order to get their attention..

I think this speaks for itself :)

I'm currently listening to Universal Death Squad by Epica (can you think of a more metal title than that? :P)

off topic and absurd....pwnd and I used to hang out there (and he was the mod for that section)....besides a general off topic thread, we had a few games (this or that, the poster above me, word game, etc)...it was also where we had really off topic stuff like when people passed away or real news that was not gw related (movies coming out, cons etc).
We also had a thread called 'get to know your mods' where people could ask questions of the moderators.

We should do that too :). What threads should I make ^^?

Well, the mod tools here are quite easy in my opinion, but in Stormcaller we're going to make them a lot more visible to our moderators :)
I have worked with both vBulletin and Invision Power Board though, and in my opinion the UI of both was aweful (the admin UI atleast). The moderation panels are something I barely touched..

Ya she approached me about it. I just don't know how active I am going to be on here, so I didn't want to make a commitment that I couldn't fulfill. But I'll definitely be on here occasionally to say hi to people. Though the lack of an OTA area makes me a bit sad...

What area do you miss? ;) I'm pretty easy to convince :P

For the rest, welcome aboard all! :D

As a direct reaction of this thread, I have decided to remove the standard placement of your in game character name until I'm certain that it's safe to enable it again.
It's still available as a profile field and it will probably return soon but only for groups with enough posts on our website.

I'll also make sure to get a tag for in game names (like [ign]your character name[/ign]) soon, that will make sure your in game name is only visible for users with enough posts.
That will make scraping of this information harder (but not impossible).

upgrade to a new os just so I can view a website???? seriously?! I do not like any of the newer os that are out there and wont spend a dime on them. XP was the last good os that came out and I find no reason to change from it.

It works on my firefox 4 so I will just use that instead of chrome...I dont get all the images to load but they never did, so no biggie (and it was working on chrome until about 2 days ago and then it just stopped--unless you just upgraded last week I think there is something else going on and I have the last update they did on chrome before they stopped supporting xp: Version 49.0.2623.112 m ).

The way the internet works is that changes aren't always directly effective and it can take a while.
I'll be looking for a way so you can access the site without encryption, but it might take a few days for me to implement something like this.

And I would really recommend not using Windows XP (as a system admin/programmer). It's basicly an iron bucket with a few thousand holes in it. While it might work to transport water, it's not really effective anymore and it'll rust easily. If you want to see what I mean... this site will show you how many (unpatched) security issues there are with Windows XP: https://www.cvedetails.com/vulnerability-…Windows-Xp.html - it's super-easy to attack Windows XP as the security issues are easily found online and they aren't being fixed anymore.
At the least I would suggest that you don't use your PC to do online banking/payments and I would really suggest running antivirus software (though I don't know if there's still support for this). I'll try to implement a non-SSL domain, but I can't say when it'll be ready. You might also need to delete some browser data in your browser because we're using HSTS, which means that your browser will reject visiting our site if it's not over SSL, and we're asking browsers to remember that for 6 months (so you'll need to delete that bit of data - I'll explain you how once I've gotten a solution ready).

    Kev

"This site can’t provide a secure connection

    guildwarslegacy.com uses an unsupported protocol.
    ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH"

and yeah, I tried clearing the cache--didnt seem to change anything (and yes its httpS, I tried to do it with out the S but it just redirects to S).
firefox is working chrome is not (then again I am on an xp computer so chrome no longer updates either---).

Everything I can find on Google indicates this is an issue entirely on your end; likely due to your outdated operating system. I'm running W10, which would explain why I'm not having issues.

What this means is that your computer hasn't got support for the security ciphers that we use.
I'll try to explain it: our website is using encryption in order to be more safe and to provide more privacy (though security is the main reason). In order to do this, we offer several ways in which the encryption can be done: these are the ciphers we support.
However, with the move to our new server, support for the old and unsafe ciphers got dropped - Windows XP is one of the operating systems that doesn't support the ciphers that we use. It's nothing that I can easily fix while maintaining security (it would mean that I would have to drop SSL encryption).

Since we're using CloudFlare, which uses SNI with ECDSA, the support is as following:
Desktop Browsers installed on Windows Vista or OS X 10.6 or later:

    Internet Explorer 7
    Firefox 2
Opera 8 (with TLS 1.1 enabled)
    Google Chrome v5.0.342.0
    Safari 2.1
    Mobile Browsers

    Mobile Safari for iOS 4.0
    Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) and later
    Windows Phone 7

This is support from CloudFlare itself (which we both use for DNS hosting, protection against threats as well as analytics and as our CDN), so I fear I can't do anything against this unless I start paying them $20 a month just for Windows XP support... so I'm sorry, the only thing I can suggest here is to either upgrade to another OS or try to find a browser that does support our ciphers...

    Sorry! :(
