    Well, the mod tools here are quite easy in my opinion, but in Stormcaller we're going to make them a lot more visible to our moderators :)
    I have worked with both vBulletin and Invision Power Board though, and in my opinion the UI of both was aweful (the admin UI atleast). The moderation panels are something I barely touched..

    As a direct reaction of this thread, I have decided to remove the standard placement of your in game character name until I'm certain that it's safe to enable it again.
    It's still available as a profile field and it will probably return soon but only for groups with enough posts on our website.

    I'll also make sure to get a tag for in game names (like [ign]your character name[/ign]) soon, that will make sure your in game name is only visible for users with enough posts.
    That will make scraping of this information harder (but not impossible).

    The way the internet works is that changes aren't always directly effective and it can take a while.
    I'll be looking for a way so you can access the site without encryption, but it might take a few days for me to implement something like this.

    And I would really recommend not using Windows XP (as a system admin/programmer). It's basicly an iron bucket with a few thousand holes in it. While it might work to transport water, it's not really effective anymore and it'll rust easily. If you want to see what I mean... this site will show you how many (unpatched) security issues there are with Windows XP: https://www.cvedetails.com/vulnerability-…Windows-Xp.html - it's super-easy to attack Windows XP as the security issues are easily found online and they aren't being fixed anymore.
    At the least I would suggest that you don't use your PC to do online banking/payments and I would really suggest running antivirus software (though I don't know if there's still support for this). I'll try to implement a non-SSL domain, but I can't say when it'll be ready. You might also need to delete some browser data in your browser because we're using HSTS, which means that your browser will reject visiting our site if it's not over SSL, and we're asking browsers to remember that for 6 months (so you'll need to delete that bit of data - I'll explain you how once I've gotten a solution ready).

    What this means is that your computer hasn't got support for the security ciphers that we use.
    I'll try to explain it: our website is using encryption in order to be more safe and to provide more privacy (though security is the main reason). In order to do this, we offer several ways in which the encryption can be done: these are the ciphers we support.
    However, with the move to our new server, support for the old and unsafe ciphers got dropped - Windows XP is one of the operating systems that doesn't support the ciphers that we use. It's nothing that I can easily fix while maintaining security (it would mean that I would have to drop SSL encryption).

    Since we're using CloudFlare, which uses SNI with ECDSA, the support is as following:

    This is support from CloudFlare itself (which we both use for DNS hosting, protection against threats as well as analytics and as our CDN), so I fear I can't do anything against this unless I start paying them $20 a month just for Windows XP support... so I'm sorry, the only thing I can suggest here is to either upgrade to another OS or try to find a browser that does support our ciphers...

    Too bad that the forum software they use is an utter piece of crap (talking from experience here). I had a (legal!) Invision Power Board 3 running, when I upgraded to IPB4, literally EVERYTHING broke. And that was a full release of commercial software.
    Eventually I had to migrate that other forum to MyBB... because that actually had a great and supported IPB4 converter. MyBB is however really good.

    I'm not the only one with these issues though, as for example Neowin had issues for over a year following the upgrade and it broke everything on their site - commenting, the editor UI and so forth. It's still not 100% fixed over there, and that's one of the biggest IPB forums around.

    That being said, enough about my hate for IPB (though I really used to love it!). Together, we can do everything we want!

    The intention is (and always was) to be more than Guru. A lot of things are currently being planned (but not being worked on, probably my fault - I'm having a quite busy period now).

    We want to be "more" than a generic forum, we want to be more tailored to GW than Guru was. Builds should be easier to find, perhaps a gallery, we're goint to mirror mods... those kinds of things.

    If there's something you want added, just ask and we'll consider it.

    We want to be the best place for Guild Wars 1. Not being pushed in a Guild Wars 2 forum where we're not even second class citizens, but third class.

    We want to sail our own course :)

    A lot of the downloadlinks to mods on the wiki are unfortunately either behind a very slow download, or are dead links.

    In order to prevent this, please upload them here as attachments or link them so I can upload them to our server.

    Should you have one that's no longer downloadable, I'll be happy to host it ;)

  • Downtime 24/06

    Hello everybody,

    Last friday, we had a downtime of about 20 minutes because our server lost internet connection for as of now unknown reasons.
    Several services on the server went down, and within 4 minutes I was aware of the issue and started working on a restoring the service which took me about 15 minutes.

    I'm currently working on a solution that will double as our back-up server as well as our failover server. Should something occur like what happened Friday, the new server will take over and you won't experience any downtime (our second server will take over as soon as our main server goes down).

    I'm going to work on this solution in the course of next week, I hope to have it implemented before next weekend.

    honnaja: I'm from Germany and after the years of surveillance in national socialism and the GDR, we cannot accept any kind of censorship. I feel insulted by being ask to censor my posts. Censorship in the US doesn't keep any kids from using these words, so I think it's not worth to restrict free speech in media.

    I personally don't have an issue with these words, but then again, we're most likely from entirely different parts of the world. I live in a country next to Redeemer (Belgium) and well... curse words and such aren't an issue here and censorship of them is seen as 'silly'. If you're going to censor music because it contains curse words, just don't transmit it but don't put bleeps in them. Annoys me so much :P

    That being said, since this website is all about Guild Wars, I think we'll just follow the PEGI 12 advice, which states the following:

    All in all I agree with what Redeemer says though and that is that censorship doesn't work. The solution, in my opinion, is not censoring the issue but rather explaining what it's all about and giving it a place. :)

    But, let's get back on-topic and return to improvements and suggestions :)

    The GWBB code that we use comes from http://gwbbcode.arnapou.net. It's 100% pure JavaScript and it has been working quite well (apart from me having to add it manually to each theme). If you have another, better solution, I would love to hear it.
    I like your build ladder! Very handy and I agree that there should be a link to it (added it to my to-do). I'll also add links to your buildwars and paw-ned once I'm home and I've got time for it (weekends are GF time :P).

    I haven't really got the time to fix the text shadow yet, but it's very high on my todo list and it should be fixed in the next few days. I agree that changing the fonts would be a good idea, so I'll make sure to do that too.

    I'll take a look to change the header, so it will fix the issue.

    Well, while typing I already found some time to do the CSS changes...

    I'll take a look at the quotes later.

    It might be a good idea to work together Redeemer for your projects (if you would want to) - feel free to send me a PM! ^^

A game as beautiful as this one really deserves it, so I'll make sure that we'll get a nice place to put screenshots :). It's a lot of work to implement that though, so... other priorities first ;).

    Among other things I need to do are (just a small list so I can remember it ;)).
    * Put a link to our Facebook group, make our Discord channel a bit more visible, set up a donation page/system (so we can stay ad-less), edit the current theme to remove the shadow effect on text in the edit box,...

    Stormcaller is actually fine as a theme. The only thing which really needs attention is a minimal colour change for the links at the bottom to give them a contrasting colour to the background (Marked with an arrow in teh screenshot below) and the thread title of a thread in grey ontop of a dark background. Everything else can be easily seen.

    Black backgrounds may seem "cool" in theory but they rarely work well in practice. It is the reason books still print dark on a light background. Our eyes just aren't geared for night vision in the end.     Well, I've been working on a few small tweaks for the forums that should improve the 'read-issues'. The intention is that Stormcaller will get a 'toggle' between a light/dark version, as well as (hopefully) multiple backgrounds. But it's still in a concept phase, and what is online now is just something I quickly hacked together (after our current theme was installed).
    It won't be black on black, but this theme was the best I could find in a short notice ;). It all had to go quite fast. So I hope you'll like Stormcaller when it's finished. I understand that this theme can be quite hard to read... and don't worry, you're quite right to bring this up ;). I want this site to be for all of us!

    The reason for this is because people are using avatars or images that aren't on a secure (https) location. The website itself is secure, but these images aren't.

    Unfortunately, this is no easy fix for me: it would require me to download all the images and host them on this server, or change the links to a https source (if there is one).
    But, don't worry - there is no risk for security. We don't handle sensitive data, and everything is encrypted. Your passwords are hashed, so they are stored secured.

    In my test on Firefox, all I got was a small warning (a warning sign at the lock), because this kind of issue isn't really such a big deal.
    You'll also notice that this doesn't appear on all the pages.

    In general - no need to worry. The reason that Legacy even uses https/SSL (the lock) is to make our site even more secure :)!

    Okay, we have moved servers today (that's why we had the downtime), and I've worked on a definitive solution for the activation (and other mails) issue.
    This should be solved now and emails should be going to your inboxes instead of going to the SPAM folder.
