There used to be an old "of deathbane" bug where items in EotN (and maybe nightfall?) that dropped with an "of deathbane" mod came without an inscription. When the weapon contest weapons were first released in EotN many years ago, I got what was probably one of the very first emerald blades on a casual hero run of Kathandrax. It was r9...of deathbane. So basically just a naked one. This bug was acknowledged by Anet and later patched out.

I'm not sure if the same issue that sometimes causes BDSs and others to come without an inscription is related to this, but either way it's fairly rare.

Sold some stuff in game

There was a r6 gold one for sale a little while back, not max of course. I wonder how low of a req you could get in gold for certain skins (regardless of dmg), and if any of that has changed after the great nerf.

Here's a present-day Galigord staff I got within the past year. The enchant mod is indeed the last one. Can't speak for any other versions that might exist though.

Edit: Here's a current Kaolin Prot Staff as well. I just checked the wiki page for it after what you said Coffee Man. The icon shown isn't correct. That's actually the icon for the Kaolin Accursed Staff, which is dyed black, and I think the lighter red/pinkish looking color in the photo the wiki has for the prot staff is just due to whatever lighting was on it when taken.

Recently gained two prenerf staves from an inactive friend (free of charge!) Adding confirmation for Wenslauss' Faith, which is already listed here. And providing proof of a prenerf "The Stonereaper" here, which as of yet wasn't listed in this thread. This leads me to suspect there is a prenerf "Stoneweaver" as well, probably with the enchant mod on the bottom, as all three bosses (including Zarnas) are right next to each other.

Not just purples though. Someone a while back had posted a blue stormbow with I believe an 11% dual zeal mod. Something I'd never seen up until that point. I can't seem to find it now, but it seems that was at least a possibility. Cool prenerf hammer inherent as well

DV/DZ inherents were a thing when max r7 weps dropped right? Are there any max r7 dv/dz known to exist? Specifically any rares? (To my knowledge that inherent didn't use to be exclusive to rares. I think this was before the update that improved the quality of mods on dropped weapons. Feel free to correct if I'm wrong)

Back when chillblains was an untargeted pbaoe, yeah, I remember that at least. For sure yeah I doubt if any ever dropped, just saying there was like a sliver of a chance for someone to just have stumbled upon them while playing through the storyline.

On that note are there any r7 max oni blades? I don't remember having seen any screenshots of one.

Also super interested to know if there ever were or if it's currently still possible for r6 gold non-max crenellated swords to drop. I've never seen one. Was thinking it'd be pre-nerf only if anything

Probably stands to reason that a r7/16 Outcast could be possible as well? I wasn't around when max r7s drop and I don't quite know what requirements (as far as mob level etc) they had, but wouldn't anything that can drop r8/16 today be possible at 7/16 back then?

That should cover everything up to and including drops possible in Pong Mei. Theoretically q8/16 Outcasts should currently be possible as the deathhands are the appropriate level.

It, and almost all other "keyless" chests/barrels etc were removed when the key system was introduced. This was before my time, but the change to this happened in September of 05, according to wiki. The only similar keyless chests that remain are those in the Underworld, the Fissure of Woe, and Sorrow's Furnace (which was added with that same update). These chests still have the possibility of dropping Dwarven Axes, Crystalline Swords, and Serpent Axes, among others, but only in uncommon (purple) rarity.

Swamp clubs appear to be exempt from this and were, to my knowledge, only available from the initial keyless chests.

Nice to see someone from waayyyy back return to the game.

Wiki info on most of these is pretty lacking, for sure. I've seen old screenshots somewhere on the interwebs of people opening some of these, but this was years ago and I can't seem to find them today.

That part wasn't as specific as it could've been, yeah, but we're getting into details that I'm thinking might not matter too much for OP. But hey I could be wrong about that. But yes, OP, to change my initial answer, if it's q8 max and not a sword/shield/focus, it's def prenerf. If it is a sword/shield/focus, it could be prenerf, depending on a couple different factors (skin, inherent mods, gold value).

Yes, oldschool, as it is generally used today, means without an inscription slot. For example, most drops from NF and EOTN will have an inscription slot and some random inscription in it. For the most part (there are a few exceptions), any drop that has an inscription can have an equivalent "OS" counterpart. OS items are generally preferred by collectors because they are harder to come by with perfect, desirable mods. But (with a few exceptions), they offer no particular benefit over an identical item with an inscription.
Where to people find them?

Generally, OS items are found in Prophecies and Factions.
Where do people currently find q8/q7 gear?

Max q8 gear can still drop (in any rarity). However, these are currently limited to swords, shields, and foci. Q7 max gear no longer drops, but may be obtained by trading with other players. Anything q7 max or q8 max (including but not limited to the aforementioned 3 types) is usually referred to as "prenerf." These are items that were found in game between launch in 2005 and sometime in early/mid 2006.
Do gold purple and blue items all have value?

Possibly, but not always. Rarity, as far as font color is concerned, is not the only determiner of actual rarity. A certain blue or even white weapon could be far more rare than a gold one. (The answer to this question is mostly "it depends".)

Yep! Primarily in prophecies/factions.
