Returning player, questions on campaign playthrough

  • Hey all,

I haven't played GW for like 15 years. I first installed Prophecies back in winter 2005 and played on and off for several years. Now I want to jump back in and play through the Prophecies campaign mostly for nostalgia reasons and in the hopes that Reforged will enable more party play with others. Since I've been out of the game for well over 10 years, I have some questions:

    1. Are there any party builds specifically designed for campaign playthroughs including how to get the heroes etc.? I remember jack shit about unlocking stuff.

    2. I want to be able to play the game solo with heros/mercenaries. It seems like a party of 5-8 mesmers is most efficient (PvX Wiki Mesmerway). Do I need to buy the mercenary bundle to achieve this? Is my assumption even correct? I would probably just buy the mercenary package if that saves me the time to travel through all campaigns in order to unlock the differenct heroes.

    3. Does my class matter or can I just play whatever?

Any additional advice is very welcome. Thanks in advance!

  • I'll address a couple things, heroes all come from Nightfall and EotN, so expecting to use them in Prophecies requires getting to Lions Arch, and heading to those campaigns for a bit to unlock them.

There is only 3 heroes of each profession (with some exceptions).

For mesmers theres two, Norgu and Gwen, and you can swap Razah to be a 3rd (he is able to change primary profession, the *only* hero that can). So 3 possible mesmer heros.

The mesmerway hero team *absolutely requires* multiple mesmer mercenaries... how many depends on if you want to beat all of NF to unlock Razah.

Also, Merc registrar is in LA in Prophecies so that's where you'd gain access to any mercs you do buy and make.

(Reminder: if you don't buy the merc 8 pack first shot, you're stuck buying the lower amounts for more overall $ to get to 8. You can't buy just a single one to test then add an 8 pack key to your account)

  • 1. unlocking heroes asap is very reasonable and recommended imo. looking at meta builds will give you a good general idea whats good but you do not need to follow it exactly. especially when youre playing to unlock things you obviously dont have everything unlocked, so just read skill descriptions and experiment with your build.

the most important unlocks are the skills. you can do that through balthasar points (PvP) + tomes, buy them from skill NPCs in the campaigns for platinum, capture them from bosses (for elite skills) and the best (free) way are skill quests (mostly prophecies) and hero skill trainers (NF and EotN). unlocking heroes does also unlock the skills that they come with, so it may be worth checking which skills the heroes have to avoid wasting your money.

in general use the wiki to look up how/where to best get a skill.

to start i usually go to Nightfall as soon as possible to get the heroes on istan (Talkora,Dunkoro, Koss, Melonni and don't forget Acolyte Sausuke). then i go to EotN and get the heroes that you don't have to really do anything for (Vekk,Ogden,Gwen). you can then get an EotN tour to get to all outposts and do the mission to get Livia and also get Xandra.

Then i would recommend Nightfall campaign for more Heroes and hero skill trainers before EotN.

    2. you can get 3 mesmers without mercenaries and blast through the game very well if your regular heroes have good builds and equipment. i would personally say you do not need mercenaries and should just try to see how far heroes get you (very far imo). you can still get mercenaries later, also they won't be of much use when you still havent unlocked everything you need anyway.

    3. play whatever is fun to you - especially after you have proper heroes it does not matter much.
