I'm very curious if anyone could help me figure out where this little anomaly could've potentially dropped.
I've asked around but can't seem to get any closer to the source. So i'm calling upon the help of the experts! 
The most plausible theory i've heard thus far is a keyless chest in uw/topk. Could they potentially have dropped naked purple shields?
Edit: It does accept dyes so this proves it is infact prenerf?

another point to add might be the relatively high gold value of the thing. 194g is equally rare as a 388g gold item. whilst this is possible on every regular FoW/UW mob it still is rather rare and would be unlikely that the one item like it we have is such one. on keyless chests the gold values have been seen to range higher, so another small hint in that direction.
one more thing to test: does it accept a shield handle? this way we can destinguish between a bugged quest source like the battle plan thing and a proph/fac drop.

It does not accept a shield handle. So I guess we can rule out a bugged insc drop too.

Well there is the matter of blue and purple q8/16 darkwing defenders very likely originating from the EoTN beta. Perhaps this mystery Eternal comes from the same source or time period? I don't know, it's a bit of a reach I suppose. But if that was the case it should've probably accepted a shield handle.

I had conversations with various people in the know about Q8 purple eternals during my collecting period of them and the general consensus was that they weren't droppable but I knew I had seen one or two over the years.
Fwiw if memory serves correctly one was a dual redux which at the time didn't fit my vibe and looking back I should have grabbed it as an exhibit of what was actually possible.
