Where did our little monsters disappear?

They're called gravatars. A search through the woltlab (forum software) documentation indicates they're removing support for them, though I'm not sure which version we're running or whether that's entirely correct. I'll poke Kevin. Perhaps it's possible they could be readded.

Marty is indeed correct, Woltlab has decided to retire them. Our current version of Woltlab still supports it, and I have re-enabled it, so they're back for now.

In due time they'll be removed from the software alltogether I fear... so it's a temp return I fear.
