As a design engineer I have access to a 3D printer and have a growing interest in this. I'm wondering if anyone else has experience or interest in 3D modelling and 3D printing.

I'd also like to know if anyone has any Guild Wars related CAD models. I'd particularly like to print a Crude Shield!

Someone 3D printed their character for one of the Wintersday Contests: Turear Nareiva vs. Rytlock Brimstone at Königssee

Success was limited, but maybe you'd have better results with a better printer and/or different model and/or whatnot. I don't have any experience with this myself.

Interesting! I think I did see this a while ago! I wonder how they got the 3D file of their character... any ideas?

Failing any exportation of files directly from GW I can attempt to model items myself. The software I use isn't particularly friendly towards organic shapes so it may take a while though!

I think third party tools exist which can do it. I recall a long long time ago someone managed to port a variety of GW items over into TES IV: Oblivion, though not how. marvelous-marv ?

I extracted the model using this as a guide: https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/c…an_tootutorial/

The models aren't designed for 3D printing though. For example the spikes on the elementalists primeval armor are actually two joined triangular spikes. Those are a real pain to print. Also much of the details is just painted on the models with textures.

I also extracted the Eternal Shield and extruded the texture.

Thanks Marv! I'll have a look into this and let you know how it goes. I may actually try modelling the shield myself as a bit of a challenge!

The modelling has begun! I decided to do it myself for the challenge and because I wasn't entirely happy with the level of detail from the exported models Marv pointed us too.
I'm using software which is much more engineering related as a pose to animation/modelling so it's proving a little more difficult but I'm hoping the results will be pretty good!

Ok so I'm willing to add an update to this as I'm finally starting to be happy with the outcome. Here's a couple shots of the model I've made. So far I've only been able to do the basic structure, there is a lot more detailing to do and also figure out what to do on the rear, but progress is being made!

I'm sure there are people who have considerably more experience in modelling these kinds of things but I'm happy so far and hopefully it will be viable for 3D Printing!

It's been a while but the shield is progressing. I'm enjoying the challenge of modelling it and thinking I might have to model a sword/axe to go with it, suggestions are welcome! (Not an FDS, please not an FDS)

Anyway, here's an update on the shield! If anyone has any experience in modelling and CAD I'm at over 100 features to create this model. Still some of the harder detailing left to do as well.

A crude shield would best go with a core/proph skin - for a sword I'd say a Falchion/Scimitar, Flamberge, or Gladius, and for an axe I'd say a Hand Axe, Sephis Axe, or Spiked Axe.

Also, how big will this be when printed? Life size would be awesome, but I imagine it'd be smaller.

So many good options, from a 3d perspective, I think the Wingblade/Butterfly Sword skin would be cool. For Axe, I would vote for Sephis Axe.

All excellent suggestions, thank you guys! I'm a big fan of the Summit Axe. I will have a look through all the above and keep thinking. Still plenty of work to do on the shield so I've got time to make a decision. Who knows, maybe I'll start modelling them all!

Erm at the moment the model is around 80-90mm wide. It's possible to scale it up or down but I think I'd be happy with it around that size. I'm gonna have to see what the quality is like following the first print.

I finished the model last week. It's taken a long time but I'm finally happy enough to try and print it.

    Check it out!

PLA, 20% infill, 0.15 layer height, 3h 11m print time, 8.5m of filament used.

Really impressed with the detailing as this is on the standard settings. I'm looking to scale the model up a bit and reduce the layer height which should improve the quality and detail!

I'll start work on the martial weapon to go with it in the new year!

Yeah as you can see in the links Marty and Marv posted it is possible. As stated previously there is ways to rip the 3D models from GW directly however these aren't really made for printing.

The software I use doesn't have the capabilities to easily model characters, which means using the method I have to produce the shield isn't really feasible to create characters.

Ok, so after much deliberation I've decided to continue the modelling and 3D printing with a martial weapon. It was suggested by a number of you that the Sephis Axe would pair nicely with the Crude Shield and so I've started modelling this! I would expect this to take me a lot less time than the Crude Shield so hopefully you'll see a finished product sooner. I'll post some pictures once I've modelled something worth showing.

I'm a game designer with 14 years of experience, and learned most of the field including modeling. I admit I have little experience with 3d printing but the programs I use are Blender, Maya, and Metaseq.

My build ideas for GW1 stuff is to make a statue of all of my Guild Wars characters + pets+ minions + mini pets into 1 piece and some cosplay armor.

Sounds like you'd be much more versed in altering ripped models than myself.

I haven't used any of the programmes you listed.

First I gotta get my own 3d printer and I have to look into a digital painter so I don't have to paint them all by hand.

But yeah when I got something to present I'll post them. BTW thank you for giving me the idea...wait I just thought of another one.

I wonder if I could alter the model enough to make them poseable (I know I spelled that wrong.) sort of like an action figure.

Yeah, I still only have access to the work 3D Printer and a friends. I'd like to invest in one myself but I don't really have the space at the moment!

I'm not sure how easy the models are to modify however from my 3D printing experience I know there are models that you can print with pivots etc. They can be printed as one part and the articulating sections just need to be broken free.

Let me know if you have time to play around with ripped 3D models and how easy they are to modify using your software.

Sorry I neglected to mention it earlier but Blender & Metaseq are free modeling programs and Maya may have an educational version still that's free.

Blender will always be my first recommendation.

Ok, slow progress on the Sephis Axe due to real life stuff, but here's a quick update.

The hardest part has been trying to get the size ratios correct. Let me know your thoughts!

    1h? I don't follow your lingo sorry!

I'm happy with it so far. Lots more detailing to add yet!

1h means 1 handed. The way that it's designed in game would make it a 2 handed axe in real life because of how heavy and awkward it is.

The hardest part has been trying to get the size ratios correct. Let me know your thoughts!

I could easily rip the 3D models from the game for you. That should help getting the ratios right.

    Great idea Marv!

For the most part I have just been eyeing them with both the Crude Shield and Sephis Axe equipped in game.
