This is the only information I've found (page 181 of the Prima Guide in .PDF):

But after page 181 I've read all the tables of materials listed below and NONE mentions the Brick of Mud or Clay Brick. The item is mentioned a few times in the guide (the collector that requires this material, etc) but then, nothing else in the entire guide. Nothing at all.
So, we have the statement of some users from GW Guru saying that this item indeed dropped, others saying that this item never dropped to them, and this text from the guide saying that can be obtained with normal savage kits (but the weapon to savage is never mentioned).
If the info of the guide regarding the savage kits is correct (let's assume it) according to what Spun Ducky said: "Prima guides were written before the game release" then the Brick of Mud was available in the beta in the Ascalon Foothills, and removed in the game release itself (the item, not the collector, I mean).
There's a bit of chaos here with the understanding of all the info. It would be easier if an HONEST developer said once and for all: "Yes, this item was available and it could be obtained from <whatever>" or "No, this item was designed but never implemented." and "We removed this item at this point <whatever>."
But well, at this point in 2020 is useless to think about it, I don't even know if there is still someone from that time working at ArenaNet currently.
Sadly even if there is a dev left the odds of them having worked on that specific thing and even remembering is near zero. The other sad thing about trying to answer questions like this is that guild wars was created prior to modern source control for the most part. The cornerstones of the industry now a days is Git and Team Foundation Server that didn't exist yet at gw release. There were earlier versions of SVN(Subversion) but game studios tend to be hectic so its quite possible they quite literally would just zip up folders of files to merge into the main folder so to speak with each patch leaving no notes or history.
It is this very chaotic reason that I suspect a lot of questions or miscommunications have happened from PR reps over the years because quite literally they don't have a historical reference or anyone to ask. My personal opinion is that they were a salvage/drop in early betas and scrapped before release but they never cleaned up the traders until a few years later. The other problem is gw has had a lot of what I call shadow updates, sometimes very large and game changing but they never officially acknowledge there was a patch. These updates tend to fix things they don't want to talk about or someone in the chain didn't deem worthy of notes.

Since you are looking into quite ancient topics that few players are left from around then I will share my perspective as a closed beta player. I never personally saw a clay brick or Brick of Mud. The spot where majority of players first encountered them as even existing was in ascalon foothills. There is a crafter there that was the first spot in game that offered them as far as I know. I went back in wiki history and you can see he at one point did offer to craft clay bricks. I can't say for certain if they dropped in beta as that was a very long time ago and everyone was more focused on play than long term stuff. I do think you might get a joy out of flipping through the prima guide though for historical stuff. Prima guides were written before the game release so they were chocked full of wrong information at release however since all the info was gathered from betas they can be quite neat historically.

The prima guide is a fun look into all sorts of things that changed or got removed between beta and release.

While the generic term most use is keyless chest, these "chests" actually had many names and different models. Iron strongbox, lockbox, barrel, stash, and many others I can't remember. They sometimes had a similar theme to the area it was found in. Yes, they were all removed except the previously mentioned spots and now we have a randomized chest spawn location for locked chests. Interesting enough where some of these statically located keyless chests use to spawn tend to be areas where locked chests spawn.
Edit: One of the things for the museum I have wanted to add is take pictures of locations where keyless chests use to spawn. I don't remember near all of them just mainly the ones I farmed but I am sure others could show spots too.

Yes that nerf was much earlier, cantha didnt drop gold 12-13% weapons, while it did drop max q8 weapons. i did look up the update that nerfed 12-13%'s on wiki sometime but cant remember exact date, ive probably posted it this thread or similar even hmm.
For prediction thing, i dont think high priest zhang ever gave zkeys, but only tournament reward points you could exchange to zkeys with tolkano.
I remember when they added the feature and zkey price crashed because everyone was awarded 50 reward points which allowed get 10 zkeys free. Of course the Xunlai tournament house predictions made huge drop to zkey price aswell. Until that their value was very high.
It was indeed Tolkano, I have updated the post as I have been going through notes for the museum portion.

Can you explain this please? I don't remember what was the purpose of this NPC at all.
The NPC handled the monthly tournaments when they allowed you to gamble on them for free z keys. A new account was also able to get 5 free zkeys as a one time thing. Keep in mind this was a very long time ago so things like toolbox didn't exist in public but using the same concept of sending dialog hex codes for the 5 free z keys it was possible to change the code slightly to create any item in game and oddities like monster weapons even.

Comparable things don't sell often enough to give any concept of a price check, don't sell to private messages and list it for sale here to get a real idea of value.

New Items and to the top.

Krytan (Match Stick) War Hammer still drops, but are rare. I got my q9 15^50 and +5e both from chest running at Ice Caves of Sorrow Mission.
War Hammer with Ball Hammer Skin I believe is a quest/collector only item. Possibly drop as white but definitely not as gold.
The Ball Hammer itself is Insc only as far as I know.
In theory a Q9+ Gold OS ball hammer could have dropped from mausoleum glitch but otherwise even during keyless chests days they were only blue/white in OS for sure. Matchstick hammers come from white mantle and most consistent spot I have heard for them is ice caves of sorrow as well. Any q8 version is gonna be keyless chest or very early white mantle kills.

Spun Ducky Coming across a max gold unid q8 Sword in the current year is insane. Coming across 2 is just absolutely ludicrous. Holy shit! and grats on the Falchion man, that's not too shabby! Did the person you bought them from keep them unid for all these years, or were these actually fresh drops? What's the story, we need more information about this insanity.

OT: Had one of the most unusual 10 minute Mantid farm sessions today.
For some strange reason the gold items identified with both double and max mods. Except caster weapons, those all dropped dual mods but with 1 off.
Had a few more but these were the highlights:
Bit sad the shields don't have max armor, especially the demon.
I was told they were fresh drops, however looking at unid value they are for sure postnerf samples and they were from Tyria's favorite region pong mei.

What is this luck? Was this and the broadsword dropped?
Dropped but not by me, I bought them from a chest runner. I do love extra luck weeks.
Also for the anticipation:

Like a beast, been scoring some deals and finds lately.

I generally let things run for 3-5 days or until something hits a price I am cool with then I sell.
Current Sale:

C/O: 45a Purely

C/O: 50a Sicilianking
SOLD ITEMS:
Sold for 50a.

ID IT NOW !
Every single q8 sword I have ever gotten in the unid form as purchased or dropped has either been while hexed or less than 50 mod. So I think I will keep this one unid rather than mourn the loss as it looks prettier this way.

Pretty sure this pong mei drop counts as felony level assault by anet.

Am sorry to interrupt the nice research on creature shields, but are you guys 100% positive that :
TRIBAL AXE
- Shing Jea Island
- Random drop
does not drop there in gold ? How come, i droped some in CHO HM, but it was white obviously so am wondering why not gold ? :O
Gw drops really don't follow a lot of rhyme or reason as to why somethings can drop in certain colors. If I remember right you can get gold inscribable ones but for OS it is only blue or white in max damage mainly from HM. There is a single Gold OS max tribal axe in existence that was a mausoleum drop and it has long since been customized but that is an exception to the rule.
- Shing Jea Island

chaos axe 3a

I think Red's info is about as close as possible for any prediction. Too scarce of an item with low enough sales that its a post it for sale and see.

Oni blades are dropped by both Oni and Shiroken. (Oni blades can "commonly" be found in Raisu Palace, which has no Oni.) I believe Tahnnakai Temple (mission) and Sunjiang District (mission and explorable) are the only places where max r8 Oni blades (and other Shiroken-related drops) can still be found. This should include Golden Phoenix Blades as well, as I have gotten one from Tahnnakai Temple before (not r8 tho). The chests have to be near Shiroken bosses, but that's basically always the case in Tahnnakai. I've done chest runs in the mission before just for the sake of trying to get some.
Very interesting, I never knew that thanks for the info and explanation.

I was nearly certain oni blades were in the lot of no longer possible in q8, however that seems to be incorrect. I had an oni blade drop from a chest in tannhaki temple mission normal mode and it was a canthan chest which can drop q8. No idea how the hell an oni blade came from the chest as it was only surrounded by affliced at the rit boss. My guess is internally in the game engine the rit boss is actually an oni or maybe there is an oni trigger spot there from the explorable that isn't fully removed?

Uhm? You sure about this statement? I'm not sure if you truely acknowledge the rarity, demand and value of a swamp club...
I am thinking even a white, blue, or purple non max crap swamp club at this point with collectors might outpace a q9 prot bds as well.

Thats why I said OS in front of every shield

Yep, interesting to me is purple weapons can have max dual mods in a few odd cases like -2 stance -20% conditon. So it is possible to drop a q8/16 -2 -20% cripple magma shield. Of course you are going to have to win the kilroy lottery.

Yeah, r8 is determined on the Enemy level. I believe from 18 to lvl 21 or something (I'm sure I'll be corrected). So if an item only drops from certain foes and those foes don't come in the level range that can drop r8, that item doesn't come in r8 anymore.
Examples:
OS Eternal Shields
OS Magmas Shields
OS Shadow Shields
OS SWS's
OS SSS's
etc
Q8 gold shadow shields/swords can drop from shard wolves in old school. While it may not have dropped yet from the shard wolves i am confident it can happen. I have been in 1 fow sc run where someone got a gold q8 longsword from shardwolves. Also every single one of those shield skins can drop from kilroy chest 1 and that is also where I got the post nerf q8 summit axe among a few q8 shield skins. So technically kilroy can drop purple q8 max versions of those besides some oddities where you can get inscribable versions. Gold versions for the most part are a dead end on most of these skins, however purple and blue are still quite open.
