20th Year Update Announcement

  • Very happy with the update! Could also bring back other players so that might be cool!:D

One really small disappointment (or I am too blind) is that I didn’t see a “new” axe skin. But still very cool that they released the pre-order skins etc into the game (and even made a new one😲). This might take Fashion Wars to a new level:D

  • Apart from this news, I hope that the official store will sell off everything at 50% during the event, including costumes, account upgrades, etc. And will also offer items and emotes available with the collector's versions..

That would be stepping on everyone who bought those exclusive codes, limited by physical copies. Its unlikely they will do that and probably why they went with the in game route of adding skins, an already grey area.

Isn't it what they just did

  • I have a few thoughts about some of the added weapons:

EotN Pre-Order weapons imo are clearly fancier than the average skin which would warrant dungeon end chest exclusivity. They also strongly resemble the themes of the different EotN regions.

Glacial Blades (Sword and Daggers) thematically really fit the Dragrimmar Dungeon which could really use some more / nicer exclusives and thus they belong there. I also think that they will (and should) have the fixed icy mod as the preorder item. As much as i like zealous on my daggers, the glacial visual element is very prominent on the skin and it should be in line with other weapons like that (FDS, IDS...).

Hourglass Staff has similar elements as Clockwork Scythe, it needs to be an Asura Dungeon and the only matching choice is Oolas.

Darksteel Bow looks Charr-y and thus belongs in one or multiple Charr Dungeons.

The other former PvP weapons don't need to be dungeon exclusive, they are similar to other skins with different tiers. And they can be region-specific, i.e. Etched Sword = Norn Area, Granite Edge = Asura.

Nightfall Pre-Order Items should not be tied to Mallyx or realm of torment, they should just be general random drops. Maybe tied to some specific areas or enemies, like the Soulbreaker could only drop from the blue Dervish Djinn which would kind of match its visual style.

Both Nightfall Pre-Order weapons have fixed elemental mods, for the scythe's skin it is visually justified but the spear skin does not really have any fire or glowing elements that would warrant the fire prefix. Then again, the spear looks more generic anyway and it would not really matter too much imo.

Factions Pre-Order items look like they could just be random Canthan drops (I don't mean this in a bad way) and imo that's what they should be. Put them in Urgoz and Kanaxai chests as well for good measure, so we can have both OS and insc. versions and everybody will be happy.

The Spiritbinder should be Ritualist req exclusive imo, it's in the name.

I don't have many thoughts on the other weapons, the ones 'available everywhere' are obviously much more random and for Tyria exclusives there aren't really any Tyria specific elite missions which would mean that they're probably somewhat random too.

btw. there already exists a drop research thread for the upcoming new weapons:

  • You folks are all excited about the updates, but will your excitement continue to last, when almost everybody will run with the same formerly "legendary" pet as you?

"Look man, I've finally got a Kanaxai!" - "Yeah, me too!" - "Oh no, looks like everyone has it now..." - "Hey, where is your Kanaxai?" - "Well, I am not using it because don't like it anymore."

It is human nature to aim for something that not everybody can get their hands to that easily. This update is going to take a major part of that away from everybody because those pets meant to be something special for a reason, when they were given out only to the players who truly earned it in the old days during the PvP contests. You may realise this sooner than later, and then we will see how much longer you will continue to like the changes.

I personally don't care, since I stopped playing Guild Wars some years ago, but it is worth noting that Guild Wars doesn't have much to offer anymore that credits fame or excitement. The whole excitement of finally getting your hands on those pets will be nothing but a shadow of the past.

So this change is unusual for ArenaNet, since they realised it was a mistake with the asia pets back in the days during the 8th anniversary already - hence they never repeated this mistake ever since (up until just recently that is). So this step of giving away the most famous items out for such trivial things like clearing hard mode missions makes me wonder, if this is just an attempt to allow players gather all the last good things that the game had to offer just easier, to make it less impactful when ArenaNet finally announces the shut down of the servers with their next step.

I guess, only time will tell.

  • Way to be a debbie downer...... RIP minipet market

I don't think so. It is a proven fact that socialism has never worked in the past, and it always ended in a failed state. This update is pretty much the same approach, in an in-game economical sense, since, unlike many other online multiplayer games, Guild Wars is set with a very unique trading system which requires items not affected by inflation, which is now being taken away with that update. Even if this type of economical transformation wasn't intentional by ArenaNet (Let's assume it wasn't), it was ultimately thanks to it, that led to the amazing game that you like so much today. They may never admit it, but ArenaNet eventually began to realise and intentionally used it to their advantage.

Minipets over the past few years have just been a colossal problem, it fed directly into RWT heavily and they were constantly, and consistently being sold on the black market. This hasn't been the case with other valuable items for the most part. I think it was just addressing something that was a long time coming, much like adding the 7th year presents with previously rare minis because of the duping problem and inability to ban every account that participated. The brink of absolute abuse by a select few, who controlled the market and sold them as they pleased, some of which could have been old duped ones from an un-banned account. Anyways, it hurt a select few innocents, which is very unfortunate, but everyone can agree it had gotten out of hand.

  • A lovely suprise. Didn't hoped for a big update but that seems great. I like the idea of bring back these rare minis but the best part are all these "new" weapons. Many of them looks very cool and I try to get some of these... perfect time to play GW again.

  • now the big question: are those decade skins also available as drops?

would be kinda lame if they aren't

Yes they are (see updated text) (For the store the update must be manual, item by item, patience!)

    New Anniversary Content

For the full list of limited weapons now permanently available as rare drops, check out last week's update Feedback:Game_updates/20250409.

    Here is an overview:

    • Various weapons previously limited to pre-order bonuses or special promotions, and a few weapons previously exclusive to the PvP Reward system, have been added to loot tables across Tyria, Cantha, Elona and Eye of the North.
    • In some cases, weapons are only dropped by enemies in their associated campaign.
    • These weapons are low drop rate and only appear at Rare quality.

Additionally, there is a new series of permanent quests which allow you to revisit the stories and endgame areas of Guild Wars in Hard Mode. They are permanently available from Merrise, Sworn to Seas in Embark Beach.

    • These quests reward a series of Miniatures previously only available in limited numbers as prizes from conventions or contests. To preserve the value of the original pre-release items, these cannot be traded between players.
    • In the case of the Miniature Gray Giant, the new quest rewards the Broken Toy needed to start the quest "The Toy's Story". The Miniature Gray Giant received from this quest is not tradeable.

During the Anniversary festival each year, a series of Unique weapons featuring some of the returning weapons and new mods have been added to the Ancient Anniversary Weaponsmith.

    One More Thing ...

We're excited to announce we have permanently added a new series of suffix mods, "of the (Profession)". These are available as rare drops on main-hand weaponry. These mods have the following special features:

    • They increase the associated profession's Primary Attribute stat up to a small limit, even if the equipping character normally would not have access to it.
    • The weapon will be upgraded with a special streak effect when used in combat, based on the profession's associated color. In the case of spears, bows, rods and staffs, which often don't support a streak on the weapon itself, this streak is applied to their projectiles.
    • For Rods, as with other suffixes, these mods will only appear in Nightfall or Eye of the North areas.

    Item Updates and Bug Fixes

    Item updates:

    Bug fixes:

    • Fixed an issue that caused the Anniversary elite skills Shadow Theft and Heroic Refrain to not increase attributes that had zero points invested.
    • Fixed an issue that caused the "Deals 20% additional damage during Festival events" weapon mod to add more damage than intended.
    • Frame rate is now capped at maximum 180 fps to prevent the graphics system from stealing CPU from the networking system. (Modern graphics cards can easily render the game over 400 fps!)
    • Fixed a bug that would cause an arithmetic exception on some larger displays.
  • my genuine reaction to this update:

    *replace 'Star' with 'Guild'

  • max is 5 if we assume the new decade weapons are max (which i do assume)

If you take a closer look at the new green weapons, they're designed to work with PvE elites from other professions (synergy).

  • I am gonna go nuts with theory crafting builds and setups with this 😏 This is such an insane addition, I freaking loveeeee. Instead of adding skills or whatever, they gave the option to use the primary attributes which gives that much more options;D
