• Besides ID'ing it how would one tell if this is going to be inscribable or old school - drop information is not available.

My understanding is this shield can drop in UW (entered from ToA) and TotPK as old school and in DOA as inscribable? Perhaps UW entered through Chantry would also produce inscribable versions in NM monster level 16-20?

Changed the title of the thread from “Q8 AR 18 Blue Eternal” to “Q8 AR 16 Blue Eternal”.
  • Items that are unid can be tested. Supposedly, inherent +AL vs x are weaker than their inscriptions (non-os) that are identical, so you could test vs clean shield, vs insc shield with various insc, and yours to see if something matches. This is really tedious.

You can also salvage mods from unid items - this works with expert and superior salvage kits but not sure if it does with perfect kits. If you pull out some unid mods and see that the shield goes white, then it did not have an insc/inherent insc. Using an expert/sup salvage kit to salvage unid mods can break the item just a heads up

Good tip, just need to see if I want to risk the destruction of it or just ID it :)

  • yeah, everywhere where eternals drop a blue q8 could drop - so topk,uw,doa,nm,hm... you name it.

if os or insc - you can test by trying to apply a handle - if the cursor icon doesn't show impossible then it is insc area source, else not.

if you know it is insc area drop - then you can test for the possible mods - easiest to test are the handles, so if it does not have any of those it has to have an incription mod aka be insc. if however it does have a handle... not so easy. you could test for all the armor and damage reduction options, but that will be dreadful.

I WTB all kinds of Tower Shields and Defenders. I do drop research - if you find anything remarkable or want to see the results - check the thread or send a pm!

  • More specifically, inscribable versions of items that are normally non-writable are writable due to oversights on the part of the game designers. For some monsters these, the drop updates have not been updated. This is normally the case when a monster is integrated into a campaign other than the one it originated from. It is the instanced area, linked to the campaign, that will determine whether or not objects are inscribable.

Also this was the case for the 2010 Halloween mausoleum quest. The instanced area was defined as part of a campaign where only non-inscribable drops could be obtained. However, monsters could drop non-inscribable spears and scythes. These monsters were also linked to the NF campaign in terms of drops and normally only drop inscribable items. This also caused a bug with items with an additional bonus. Unfortunately, this is not the case for inscribable weapons of NF.

    For example:

    • Terrorweb Dryder in NF/Realm of Torment = Eternal Shield, Eternal Bow, Storm Bow, and Ghostly Staff.
    • Original Prophecy Titans, but found in NF/Realm of Torment = Magma Shield (see other?).
    • Obsidian Furnace Drake at NF/quest: Drakes on the Plain = Shadow Shield (see other?).

Note: Just like the non-inscribable blue Eternal Shields, the inscribable 8/15 and 8/16 versions rarely come with a inscribable slot, unfortunately.
