Announcing the Guild Wars Guru Archive

  • Since the Guru archive has been down for half a year now, we decided to do our best and try to provide a (temporary) archive of Guild Wars Guru.
We've been working hard (and by that we mean that we've been using our whips on Kevin) to make this possible.

You can now visit the archive on http://archive.guildwarslegacy.com (we do suggest you use the links below) - HOWEVER, keep this in mind: this isn't a real backup, but rather parts of the website tied together. Huge chunks of the site are still missing, you can't use search and navigation isn't buttery smooth - however, you can find a LOT of information in it and you're able to recover images, posts etc.

This is the most expensive part of Legacy right now to host, being over 100 GB big (Legacy itself is right now way below 500 MB in size). If you use this often, please consider donating to Guild Wars Legacy.

Questions and inquiries about this archive can be sent to scribe@mail.guildwarslegacy.com

  • Hi,

Perhaps I can help with your server needs and costs.
I work in a centre that hosts servers, if you want, hit me up for a discussion

  • I'll post there since Kevin did not answer to my PM :
    "Hey

Any guru thread with the symbol "%" in his name makes an error : 400 bad request (because there are % in the link)

any chance to fix that please ?

    thanks for the work"

  • I'm not staff or a mod but everything seems to work for me. What browser are you using?
Images like http://archive.guildwarslegacy…eq%208%20insc%20staff.JPG work for me
    So do threads like http://archive.guildwarslegacy…es%20it%20exist_.017.html

    %20 is a space, %27 is ' etc

Which threads with % in the name are you referring to? I've been looking thru the archive for a while and can't seem to find % as a text character in a thread title, can you point out where to look so I can check if I get the error too?

Edit just found 02942 The minus 60% DP coffee mug.001.html but it works for me as well.

    Why I actually came here

I'm wondering if there is a way to pull the url of where an image was hosted out of a post in the archive? I had a collection on there but the image was hosted elsewhere so it wasn't saved and is just a broken image. I can't remember where I had it hosted and I lost the original image so pulling the link out of the img bbcode would help. Is the only way viewing the html source?

  • Ah gwg, even during my years of not playing Gw i used to lurk on gwg.

I actually had two separate accounts as well, because I forgot my original login.

Man, I was so young back then that I used to spam the forums so much and others caught on and the mods knew but I was so oblivious to the concept of spam. Luckily, I was never punished or reprimanded in any way, but it's funny to look back on.

  • talking about those ones (for example) :
    - http://archive.guildwarslegacy.com/09/09%20Sell/61665588%20Perfect%20Tyrian%20req8%20Healing%20Ankh%20and%20Tyrian%20+15%%20always%20Sephis%20Axe.001.html

    ...
go to sell or price check (for example), and open a thread where there is a % and you will see

the ones you gave works for me aswell :)

As far as I can tell, no. The image links have been replaced with links to the ones on the Legacy server so there's no longer a reference to their original host locations. It's possible using the Wayback Machine though. Looking at an image in my Warrior guide, the Legacy archive source gives me this:

    Code
    1. view-source:http://archive.guildwarslegacy.com/15/Img/20f697n.png

while the wayback machine source gives me this:

    Code
    1. view-source:https://web.archive.org/web/20160601161643im_/http://i62.tinypic.com/20f697n.png

which is what you'd want. If the image host has deleted the image I don't think there's a way to retrieve it though, regardless of whether you've got the url or not. Whether the images were saved or not isn't a matter of whether it was uploaded to Guru or elsewhere, it's a matter of whether that file was still live when Smoke downloaded the all the forum content. If it was elsewhere, like tinypic in the example above, and you uploaded anonymously (I think) then they'll be deleted after a certain amount of time.

    -------

As for the percentage sign issue, if you put '25' (without the quotes) after the relevant character (which can be hard to determine given spaces translate to "%20") it'll load. So for example

    Code
    1. http://archive.guildwarslegacy.com/09/09%20Sell/61665588%20Perfect%20Tyrian%20req8%20Healing%20Ankh%20and%20Tyrian%20+15%%20always%20Sephis%20Axe.001.html

    won't load, but

    Code
    1. http://archive.guildwarslegacy.com/09/09%20Sell/61665588%20Perfect%20Tyrian%20req8%20Healing%20Ankh%20and%20Tyrian%20+15%25%20always%20Sephis%20Axe.001.html

works. That's certainly not practical and I don't know how difficult it'd be to actually fix the issue, but if you really really want access to a broken thread, that's how to do it. Not sure why some threads aren't breaking though. That coffee mug thread has the invalid url characters automatically translated but it's only happening for that thread...

  • :( Either I'm doing it wrong or the wayback machine doesn't have an archive of the relevant page of the beloved collections thread. TBH finding the old image would be helpful, but it's more just me being lazy. I still have all the items that were in the image plus a few I wanted to add to that image. It probably is gone since it was anon on imgur or tinypic. I guess I'll just have to see if I backed up my screenshots somewhere or take a bunch of new ones and start over on a new version.

  • Right now the Archive is running in a special Docker container, so fixing those special characters would be a ton of work and unlikely to be done.

The solution of Marty does however work - thanks Marty!

  • Can't believe this blast from the past is here - well done to all those involved for porting it - and big thanks to Legacy for hosting! I'll be sure to donate :)

  • I was going through the chestrunners thread and I noticed the archive contains many doubles of the same page. Most pages there is 2 copies of. If you look at the size column it's pretty obvious. I know it would be a task but it may be possible to curate it a bit and remove the doubles to save some space. Just looking here it's quite a few doubles. http://archive.guildwarslegacy…%20Campfire/11%20Farming/

Is there a reason for the doubles I'm missing? If the whole archive is similar it could really add up.

  • I believe that's on the list. Kev and I were talking about that, and it's a large job, and for the moment there are other things to deal with first.

  • Yes, ideally I would like to apply deduplication on the entire archive, so that any file that occurs multiple times is only stored once and replaced with symbolic links.
That would however require a technical overhaul - it is on the to do list.
