alright i have not played the dungeon yet, but the wiki says his level is 16, 20 (30). and you showed max drops in NM.
does that mean gold q8 crystallines?

His level is 16 on the first run but then it goes up to 26.
Level 16 Varney is not repeatable even if you abandon the quest that adds Althea to party. So you get one run on level 16 Varney per character. Is the consensus that level 16 can drop q8 (albeit much rarer than q8 dropping from level 20 mobs)? That was at least my understanding, so I guess yes but farming it is near impossible due to getting one run per character unless someone finds a way to repeat level 16 Varney.

but 'up to 26' means theres more than one chance at least, and if 20 is among them thats the highest max q8 chance?
you would not need to repeat the boss at lvl 16 if you could at 18, 20. then again i really dont know how his leveling works.
He goes from 16 immediately to 26. There is no in between.

then the wiki is just wrong at the moment, or refering to his level at another time idk
Enraged Phantom is level 24 now in NM, the wiki lists it as 16–24 and I remember that before the update on the 30th, he was level 16 in NM. All of this might be unintentional or a bug.
Edit: I also suspect it's a display glitch, because it's very easy to knock down, doesn't deal much damage, and clearly doesn't live up to its displayed leveI also suspect it's a display glitch, because it's very easy to knock down, doesn't deal much damage, and clearly doesn't live up to its displayed level.
anyway, if lvl16 can drop max q8 then those crystas would not technically be pre-nerf anymore
Varny the Zealot is level 26 in NM (as far as I'm concerned).
Otherwise, if all you're interested in is clearing the dungeon as quickly as possible without completing any quests, that's possible. The only requirement is to have a player in your party who can accept the quest from Althea inside the dungeon (and be in Reforged mode of course).
Enter the dungeon (even if the door is closed) by going to the location below ->
If you go in without anyone who has access the quest, you can gate glitch the two “doors” on Level 1 and Level 2 (even without Althea to break the relevant rock). You’ll then be on the 3rd floor, which has no boss or chest.
Note: there aren't any regular chests to open in this dungeon (?) and nothing related to the Light of Deldrimor..
so there's already a caster crysta for sell huh?
Can't wait for them to cost like 100a bc of bots

lol is all I can possibly do. These things which were one treasures of the game are going to become commonplace. This didn't take long and the bots probably haven't even gotten to them yet. Can't even argue these are rare drops. These seem to be the designed drops.
So you technically could farm a q8 crystalline by creating new characters, rushing them to the dungeon for lvl16(20?) Varny. Then delete and repeat
is the new dungeon dropping insc or uninsc of these crys/krytan/etc? I thought it only dropped insc.

Uninsc from the boss. Chest drops insc things.
Ppl seem to forget 2weeks said they will bring OS items to chest too back when they fix the bugs.
Im waiting for OS +5e eternal blade when that happens

thats allrdy possible and even in Duo mods since Unident weps have full power of the mods.
so a q9 +5e 19/20% Ench Eblade is possible. the +5e is allrdy easy mod to test. and ench isnt to hard either.

Dungeon itself is trivial with a vos spike. It’s like ooze pits, it takes like 7mn for a group and if you farm it during favor in Hard mode… you can also solo it on ranger easily and kill the boss quickly
Then again I’m fine with my inscr version, I don’t care about os items anymore

It probably means they will add back the os items dropping from the boss to the loot table of the chest as Os, so os crystallines, serpent, krytan but inscr eblade

Already 4 5 (Forgot about the caster one) OS Gold Crysta for sale just in the top few wts posts. A pair of Krytan Axes and a few Serpents. Probably more than have been for sale in the past 5 years. These items are all going to become merchfood in a few months.
I care in the sense that its a shame to see 20 years of these things being unobtainium reversed overnight. First minipets, then max/gold pre items, now these rare skins. They might as well just add Q7's, Swamp Clubs, Dwarven Axes back to the drop table, put storage in pre, and drop EL Reindeer and Henchmen tonics into the Zaishen chest and lets call it a day. The attitude by some game dev clearly seems to be that everything should be attainable for everyone, so lets just make it so.

Not that i wanna justify something about Prices from the new items here, but give you my view: "Already". Only a handfull of people grind this atm like idiots and its mostly sc players. Mostly Solo (Cons, Pcons, Runs are Costly). You need xxx Runs for 1 Gold Drop from that 1 Foe at the End and probably get one which is high q and non max mod. Reality is, white or blue items, maybe few Purple. Meanwhile Casual Players complain that the Dungeon is too hard in HM and they get Rekt with their 4man Heros Parties. So ye idk about that "merch food" thing. But hey, time will tell. There are many who wanna complete a Collection or Start one and those things still don't drop like Candies.
But ye let's see what dev's hit next lol. prob Tonic's, easy to do i guess. Let's see
We should be happy, we get some updates. Many of us lost, Value in form of some items held already. it is what it is.
a quick morning poop:
That’s what I fear and hate most about the MMO/co-op RPG genre: the time commitment.
Unlike games where you play the same content over and over again and get immediate satisfaction (FPS/action games, for example) and don’t have to wait for rewards (unfortunately, this is becoming increasingly rare). MMO/co-op RPGs force you to repeat content over and over with either: luck-based drops, items obtained on each run that you have to accumulate, or mind-numbingly boring leveling. All of this plays into the reward system, just like casino games. Today's gamers are becoming addicted to rewards (but rarely admits it or criticizes those who are, believing themselves to be better or stronger than them).
This significantly changes players’ mindset and what they’re looking for in the game in question. Especially over the past 10 years, the “trinity” has been eliminated your characters engage in melee combat, heal themselves and unleash meteors as big as the moon.
The dungeon isn’t anything new. Okay, it’s pretty they’re playing the nostalgia card. But ultimately, there’s no real mechanics. No waiting for the right moment to strike the boss or avoid damage zones, triggering switches, etc. I’ll remind you that this was already announced for EOTN back in 2007. In 2026, still nothing you’re coasting on “no strategy” by playing with your left foot (who said mobile version?). Or for this new dungeon in HM, the ghostly mesmers and healers are, let's face it, poorly balanced.
The only challenge left is trying to farm an expensive item before it becomes common and unwanted. Like Melandru, it’s not hard it just takes longer (and bored). If this is the new content, I’m asking for a Vanilla version of GW lol.
Flush the toilet.

What a sad perspective to have. This is their exact point, things should be attainable for everyone, not just veterans of 20 years. With the surge of new players it’s unattractive to have stuff that they could only afford by playing for years. Imagine starting a new game and there‘s a bunch of items that aren’t obtainable anymore and everyone is flexing on you with these cool looking skins/minis. People that are against that are weird entitled beings with huge ego over pixels. Let others have fun too, it’s been 21 years lmao. Thank god they finally add unobtainable items 🙏🏼 praise 2weeks!
I agree with what you're saying
Although I do think that, to keep everyone happy, they could have made the effort to add new skins, not just copy/paste.

these skins are literally available inscribable , no "new player" is gonna complain about some veteran flexing on them with an os crysta. I still think it's funny they added these but knowing 2weeks/anet recent track record I doubt it was intentional.
Of course, the patch is frustrating for a very small cycle of players who "owns" (sidenote: ownership of items remains with anet) OS gold Crysta, Tyr. Serpent, Krytan.
However, typically these players also own a bunch of other extremely valuable prenerfs that due to the addition of selected items might even raise in value; in case the uncertainty of future updates is not cannibalizing this effect.
Yet, is absolutely not a novelty, that once valuable stuff was "nerfed", meaning added for wider playerbase. Think of e.g. Vizu, Zhed, Oni, Naga minipets.
In this case, I also think, it was pure intention. While doubting in some of anets recent capabilities (new mauso items), I highly doubt that it was unintended to give 1 exact foe (Varny) exactly 3 top tier gold OS prenerfs.
For now, a lot of super valuable prenerf/limited items remain: e.g., unconditionals, q7 max , DR shields, certain q8 weapon types and skins, dwarven axe & -hammer, hench tonics, reindeer ... and personally I hope that anet will leave many of them as is. Because, I think it is part of the magic of gw to sometimes see these great exclusive and desired "grail-items"/collections and it would be less fascinating of a game if just every single item would be obtainable for everyone. Where would the thrill of hunting? I dont think item-communism is the answer. And even then, there will be always extremely rare OS and even inscr postnerf-drops that wont be easily obtainable for 99%+ of players.

Sounds great until you think about it for more than 10 seconds. When everything is easily attainable to everyone what exactly are you playing for? Its fashion wars, the content is limited. Grinding hard as hell to get something to flex is basically the whole game. When everyone can have a OS Cry nobody will want one, bad non max mods/reqs are likely already going in to the merch or will be in the near future. The reason they were desired was because NOT everybody could have one. You had to invest serious time into the game in order to get one via any means because of fixed supply. You had to work really hard and long to get the reward. If you just wanted the skin inscri was there for you. Having things really hard to get is GOOD. Its things to work towards, its a challenge, its what keeps you playing the same 20+ year content over and over and over. Stopping really rare stuff being rare so that new players don't get salty that some guy who played for 50k hours over 20 years has more than them is obviously self defeating because that same new player now has less stuff to work towards. He wont play 50k hours for 20 years because he has to reason to now. He will put that once near priceless Krytan Axe in the bin because its now worthless. Nobody cares if you have one, nothing to flex. Scarcity is the only thing that gave it value, once removed its just a Hand Axe with a different name. All this applies to everything else they have messed with: Asian minis and Pre (what a giant shitshow
). Everyone gets a Panda YAY!!! ........oh wait no one gives a fuck now because the pet itself wasnt THAT cool, you only wanted it because it was VERY hard to get.

^ Take the solution to this to its end point. Everything that was prenerf is removed or now postnerf. Everybody has basically the same attainable weapons, armor and mini pets as nothing is fixed supply. Drastically less people play for years because nothing is really special and grinding another 100hr to get something everybody else has / will have doesn't seem very appealing. Is this not the exact point of inscription based items and why they were introduced in the first place? There already are inscription based Crystalline Swords and they are attainable to a brand new player who puts in a fraction of the effort required to obtain an Uninsc Crysta.
from my small perspective most people stop playing guild wars 1 because there is nothing to do/worth grinding for. Game is living from nostalgic, sick steam reviews but not many people 100+hours into it. Think every active player knows how it goes, old people come on and maybe stay for a bit and gone they are again.
making everything once rare casual in an mmorpg style game is an horrible idea in the long run and wont change that, others stated other reasons above me alrdy too.
Instead implement some existing weapons models and change a small thing, or pay someone to make handfull of new minipets, sales looking good lately in the shop so why not.
i also dont own any of these prenerf/super rare items and i think its super bad too. Pool of items to safe for as a long term player gets smaller every update. Yes its fun to run the dungeon a bit and super cool that we got a new one in post! but the poorly made updates and what followed with it, the lack of ideas, mobile coming. Sorry but for me this feels like a EA, Ubisoft, Blizzard, Tencent move and no real love for the game. Time will tell

I couldn’t have said it any better PyroLobster
As an owner of items/minis effect by these updates I’m happy that newer players get a chance at obtaining one of those legendary items , but I believe the drop rates should have been insanely low.
I ran the dungeon a few times but once I realised atleast 10 os gold were dropping each day with a relatively small player base farming them. What’s the point of trying just to get a item worth 10e
Back to retirement for me, perhaps I’ll come back on when they attack the everlasting tonic collections (which would only be fair to the minipet/weapon collectors)
Happy gaming!
Sorry for a long wall of text in advance.
As someone who has also been affected by these changes, I give my two cents to the discussion. For reference, I have Krytan, Serpent, Crysta and many 3-mods and all that. I am affected probably more than most, in both good and bad ways.
First of all - I welcome all these changes! I don't really personally see it affecting the big picture much, and I am more happy with new content and I am quite excited about hunting for these new things, even if they do seem a bit too common, at least from a short perspective. The future will tell how it turns out.
As many others have stated, GW has a unique, great scale of different kinds of items to drop, and even if some "old treasures" are added to the drop pool, there are still so many more prestige items to collect, and many things exist in drop pools that still have never even dropped to this day after 20+ years. Just move forward into something else than crystas or something, if you feel GW is ruined because you cannot keep hunting them because it's no longer "prenerf".
I like to think collecting is a journey; it's not about owning the items, but the main thing is the memories and effort we make for them. That hasn't changed even if some items we want or own are now worthless. I think that is irrelevant, if the journey has been done and the items sit in a "vault" as a memory of the journey, that's all at least I want from a game like this. I surely can't speak for everyone, but that's at least my case, since I wouldn't sell them anyway.
For example - I think I have the only active gold Krytan axe from before the update. I still remember so well the moment, after all these years, when I managed to buy it and how happy it made me. I still have the item that I would never have sold anyway - so what if new ones pop up? It's not as prestigious, sure, but after 20+ years in an old game, who cares lol. Right after I achieve something, I put my mind and hunt into new things, and I think most people do the same as well. That's the great thing in GW, there's always something else to go for.
With so many things to hunt, I highly doubt that everything will become available and lose its value. I do think that with fewer different "rare" items, the remaining "rarities" will rise in value; that has happened with minipets and happens always. Since there seems to be an unlimited source of currencies and fewer items to buy, even as an owner of a lot of other prenerf things as well, I am not happy about that side. For some it's a good thing, I suppose (the people whose plans are to sell things), but for a large majority of players it makes many things even harder to obtain, and that's the real issue here, in my opinion. I can see trading going even more into item vs item trades, and new players can't reach rare stuff; that's a real shame.
For this matter, I think that allowing prenerf things to drop would be a good thing. But it has to be done correctly and the odds have to be really small, so it doesn't completely crash the market. I think the majority would agree that it would be better to have more "affordable" items to collect instead of just a few items that are almost extinct. Otherwise, the collecting game is soon over, unless new players and items are brought into that part of the game.
But with that in mind, I would like to remind for the third time that many things that still drop (and have for decades) are insanely rare. Something being "prenerf" has too much value, in my opinion. The hunt, or as I like to say, the journey, isn't yet over with a few skins and additions.
What does make me sad, though, is if they decide to remove items from the past completely, like the 3-mods they said they will. I wish they would rather make them non-usable or something if they feel it's game-breaking, and let us have our trophies ![]()

"With the surge of new players it’s unattractive to have stuff that they could only afford by playing for years"
^ Take the solution to this to its end point. You have removed one of the main incentives to keep playing. Lots of old players who kept the game going all those years leave because they kept getting screwed by updates to keep new mobile players happy (who were never going to play long term anyway). Sounds great
FYI: I never owned anything that has been changed by updates so I havn't been effected myself. Although I expect to be soon, hope it makes those new players happy
I think the bigger issue is that, as you said, most players are old. So all they care about is for their 20 years of work to not be diminished over night, which is fair. Though things, especially unobtainable ones, need to be made more accessible or accessible in the first place. If all you care about in a game is to be the only player to have a certain item you are beyond cringe, full of yourself and live a sad and loser life. This is a GAME, it should be fun and not require grinding 1000s of hours to get a pixel. They are selling henchmen tonics for thousands of dollars online, why the fck would you want those to stay exclusive, so the RMTs can make money off of some loser that will spend $3000 to have a one of a time item that he now needs to afk in Kamadan with 24/7 to finally get noticed and get his moneys worth? xdd Both parties are losers. Same thing was going on with the exclusive minis which now rightfully lost their value. I don’t mind prestige in games, however it should come from SKILL not from time/money spent. Farming the same thing for 100h a month to be able to afford an item isn’t impressive.
And this comes from someone who actually has been affected by the updates multiple times, but I am not bitter about it, because this is a game, these weren’t real life money assets. I‘m as you can tell more upset about weird people crying about nice updates and stuff to get in a 20 year old game. Of course you can’t please all, but the negativity regarding these updates are so disrespectful towards the 4 devs that work so hard to give us nice exciting content and make things that most people couldn’t ever get their hands on available for the first time in decades. I‘d a million percent would prefer completely new skins as drops as opposed to existing ones tbh, but I understand they have to work with what they have and are only 4 people, so I‘m totally fine with them adding other items that make the dungeon exciting/worth playing, because if they aren’t able to create completely new skins, why would you even bother replaying the dungeon if the drops are generic goldies. So yeah, I hope the new players will enjoy their new crystas 🤣
Display MoreSorry for a long wall of text in advance.
I wish they would rather make them non-usable or something if they feel it's game-breaking, and let us have our trophies
Well said, Pleikki! You are a true gamer and collector
I've seen a few collections since returning to the game, some of which are priceless no matter what ANet/2weeks decide to introduce or reintroduce into a 21-year old game. With the volume of items in Guild Wars, there's always going to be something that's missing or something new to add as long as there are new contents and new items added from time to time.
New and returning players will never catch up to what some of you own as personal collections unless normal foes start dropping rare items as often as event drops, and even then, there are so many different skins, stats, and permutations to consider. If the game is to survive for another 5, 10, or 20 years, players need an incentive(s) to play such as starting collections of their own, or farming truly rare and unique items to be sold in order to be able to purchase their desired item(s), etc.
There is gaming to complete a set, and there is just staring at the market and waiting for the right item(s) to show up... The former can be exhausting, while the latter could potentially involve a lot of resources (both real world as well as in-game) if current trends persist. Both are entertaining in their own way, and both are now part of the game as well as the GW community.
Guild Wars is a game for all, be they new, old, or returning. Some items will lose their value over time, others will rise in value. Live with the fact.
It's definitely better than ANet/2weeks deciding to shut down the servers and call it a day...![]()
Imagine if a company like Rolex suddenly decided to remake and mass-produce a watch model that had been discontinued for 20 years and is now prized by collectors. Part of why that watch is special isn’t just how it looks - it’s the history, the scarcity, and the fact that only a small group of people held onto it over time. If Rolex floods the market with identical versions, the original loses a big chunk of what made it meaningful. It’s no longer a story of patience or rarity; it’s just another product on a shelf.
Another analogy is trading cards. Think about something like a rare 1999 Base Set Charizard from early Pokémon. If the publisher reprinted that exact card in unlimited quantities with no distinction, it would undercut the entire idea of collecting. The value isn’t just stats on cardboard - it’s the time, luck, and history attached to owning one.
GW works the same way. Those rare, discontinued items function like digital collectibles. They carry time value (people who were there early or put in the grind), scarcity (limited supply), and story (status, history, sometimes even nostalgia). Reintroducing them without limits strips out at least two of those three pillars. And once scarcity is gone, the item’s meaning often collapses into just its utility or appearance which usually isn’t enough to sustain that “wow” factor.
...
That said, there’s a counterpoint worth acknowledging: games aren’t static collectibles markets. Developers sometimes reintroduce items to keep newer players engaged or to avoid locking content behind “you had to be there” moments forever. A middle ground many games use is re-releasing variants (same look, slightly different tag), or keeping originals marked as “legacy”. This was ALREADY DONE with the introduction of inscr versions. That preserves the history while still letting new players participate.
Those who are jumping for joy about this update are ignorant to this. Why do you feel like you need these items to be re-added as OS? The game already solved accessibility with variants, and bringing back the originals removes the sense of history those items carried. Since variants already made the look accessible, what do you think bringing back the originals adds to the game that outweighs losing their historical rarity? For me personally, the history and scarcity are what made those items interesting in the first place. They were time capsules of when GW was at it's prime, and by adding them back that aspect kind of disappears, so it feels like more of a loss than a gain.

You‘re such a loser. Imagine crying about your precious OS weapon losing value. Can’t sympathize with you I’m sorry, here’s to them hopefully introducing more stuff that devalues your items 🙏🏼 imagine comparing pixels in a game to a Rolex lmfao. Supporting a “you had to be there“ mindset is so toxic to gamers and keeps new players from joining. It creates a fomo that is so unhealthy for gaming. You need to stop treating a game economy like an asset and shareholder simulator and have fun through gameplay. Again this most likely has to do with age though I guess… older people seem more upset about this. I genuinely don’t care that my mini panda has lost its prestige and value, if anything, I‘m happy that I can now have it on my irondhuum because I love pandas. Long live 2weeks ❤️
it should be fun and not require grinding 1000s of hours to get a pixel.
This ^
Its the difference between Type 1 and 2 enjoyment. The reward at the end of the grind is the fun. Remove the grind necessity and you remove the fun from the payoff.
Your attitude absolutely stinks of resentment. Those people who played longer or harder must now be punished because others want the rewards without the effort it took to attain them?
There are always items essentially unobtainable (or VERY hard to get) for us all. The solution isn't make them all common so everybody can have one. You only wanted it because it was hard to get. (Even more so in a game where you get no advantage, its fashion wars!)
Using your way of thinking we should put hench tonics in bday gifts so everybody can get one. The result will be mass merching like all the other shit tonics because it isnt what they are that makes people want them.
If you play because you like the content then you shouldn't care very much what rare items others have (especially when they impart no advantage in content / can have the aesthetic another way. eg os vs inscri Cry ) - I know loads of people like this
If you play because you like to grind to acquire the rare stuff then you don't want said items removed or massively diminished. - I know loads of people like this
In either case (or in a mix of both), making rare stuff common pleases nobody in the end. Apart from maybe somebody who thinks in a competitive trading game that everyone should be "equal" somehow and effort / advantages should have no rewards to keep it that way.
Do new players really want a game where nothing is very difficult to get? Where nothing is truly special? Where the progression ladder has been made purposely short?
The beautiful thing about GuildWars which few other games ever replicated is it catered for both types of fun (Type 1 and 2) really well. Because max gear is so easy to attain (+ super quick lvling) you could enjoy all the content very quickly without endless gear grind. BUT if you liked the grind payoffs you could also do that and get rare gear to look cool (also allowed for collecting of all kinds). Some items being prenerf helped this greatly considering rampant bots throughout. This balance is what made the game great imo and why its still going 20 years on. If you start changing either side in a haphazard way (like is being done) you will undo what made it great.
